Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Hawks dropped a non-conference match on Friday evening falling to the United State Coast Guard Academy in four sets by a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20) final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks challenged the Bears through the first end and kept everything close, freshman Tiffany Mendez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) got the kill to make it 5-4 Bears. Subs came in and the Cost Guard extended the lead to 8-4 with kills by Shannon Shaw and Amelia Matson. A kill by Jordan Murphy brought the hawks light while down 13-19. A service ace by Vickie Mancie was big for the Coast Guard as they swung past the Hawks in the end of the first 25-15.
- The Hawks came out punching in the second, multiple attack errors by the Bears put the hawks over 5-0. Sophomore Liahnna Orange (Linden, N.J.) dealt multiple serves with purpose and got help from sophomores Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) and Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) with impressive blocks along the way. Through the second, the Bears tied everything at 19-19, from a Dylan Elferdink Kill. A kill by Sarah Somer had the Bears in at 23-24, A close set, won by the Hawks 25-23 keeping everything set at 1-1.
- Coast Guard had a lot of momentum going into the third. A kill from Murphy and minor attack errors from the bears wouldn't stop their scoring efforts, keeping the Bears up 10-2. Hawks came around with kills and blocks from Mendez and Murphy which kept them trailing 13-16. A Strong push from the Bears offense put the Coast Guard up 21-13 off of a service ace from Kaela Hatje. - Trailing going to the fourth, we saw kills by Mendez and Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.) and a service ace from Sophomore Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) putting the Hawks up 5-3. As both teams went back and forth, junior Kylee Connally (Dallas Texas) recorded a service ace and fed Murphy for yet another kill pulling the Hawks to 13-19. However, it wasn't enough, the Coast Guard took fourth over the Hawks. Final Hawks 1 Coast Guard Academy 3.
Inside The Numbers:
- Sophomore Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) led the offense with 20 kills to go with nine digs.
- Sophomore Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) notched a new career-high with 25 digs in the loss.
- Freshman Tiffany Mendez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had nine kills with 16 digs.
