Hawks Fall to Suffolk University 63-46

BOSTON, Mass. - The Hartford women's basketball team fell on Wednesday night to Suffolk University by a 63-46 final. This is the second-straight Conference of New England (CNE) loss for the Hawks as they now fall to 4-3 in conference play. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Rams took the early 4-0 lead, before sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) made the first Hawks bucket at the 7:28 mark. Sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) netted a three-pointer after a layup by freshman Mikaela Williams (Windsor, Conn.) to even the score at 7-7. Freshman Mackenzie Hohulin (Plymouth, Mass.) kept the game even with a shot from long range, but the Rams slowly pushed the lead to 17-11 headed into the second quarter. 
  • Sabia drilled a three to help the Hawks get to within a single bucket with 7:04 to play in the second quarter. Williams added three shots from the charity stripe, while sophomore Kendall Rieman (Chicago, Ill.) finished a layup as Hartford trailed 26-21. Over the next six minutes the lead would extend to nine points, but the Hawks closed the half strong with four-straight points to trail by only five headed into the second half. 
  • The teams traded buckets in the early going of the third quarter, but after a Marchesani three, the Rams scored five-straight to lead 40-33 with 6:22 in the quarter. A long scoring drought ensued over the rest of the frame with Suffolk taking a 45-37 lead into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Rams extended the lead to a 15 points at the start of the fourth quarter. Marchesani drilled back-to-back threes to try and kick start a comeback with the Hawks trailing 55-44 with 3:31 to play. Suffolk would close strong however pushing the lead to 17 as the game concluded 63-46.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Williams had a great game for the Hawks off the bench with 12 points (4-10 FG, 0-1 3PT, 4-5 FT), three steals, three assists and a pair of rebounds. Marchesani tallied 13 points (4-14 FG, 4-7 3PT, 1-2 FT), five steals and two assists. Sabia added seven points (3-14 FG, 1-7 3PT) and three rebounds in the loss. 
  • Colby Guinta led the Rams with 20 points (7-15 FG, 2-5 3PT,, 4-4 FT) to go with nine rebounds. Jordan Moreau added 15 points (5-11 FG, 2-6 3PT, 3-3 FT), three assists and three boards. 
  • The Hawks bench provided a spark of offense with 30 points compared to just eight from the Rams reserves, but Suffolk's starters outscored the Hawks 55-16 in the win.

The Hawks will take on Endicott College in Beverly on Saturday with a 1:00 PM start.
