Hawks Fall to Roger Williams University 77-63

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford men's basketball team fall to Roger Williams University in 77-63 final on Wednesday night.

In this evening's game Hartford hosted the WE BACK PAT game. This night is dedicated to the legacy of the legendary Pat Summitt and the ongoing fight against Alzheimer's disease. Pat Summitt was not only one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, but she was a tireless advocate for Alzheimer's awareness and research. After her own diagnosis in 2011, Coach Summitt turned her personal battle into a mission for others, founding the Pat Summitt Foundation to help those facing Alzheimer's and dementia. Rapid Recap:
  • RWU Hawks got off to a hot start dropping two early three pointers for a 6-0 run over Hartford. Junior Drew Stack (Madison, N.J.) sank a three of his own to break their stride. RWU were not phased pulling away from Hartford with a ten point scoring run, RWU held the lead 16-5 with 14:30 to go in the first. Freshman Troy Santos (Taunton, Mass.) ignited their comeback for Hartford with a tough lay-up followed by a drained three-pointer to bring the lead down to just nine. RWU stayed consistent in the paint knocking down key points that kept the Hawks at arms-length, 29-14, 5:46 on the clock. Freshman Chidera George (Atlanta, Ga.) drove up the lane and finished with a strong right-handed hook dunk, powering the ball through the hoop with authority. Sophomore Jaylen Brown (Baldwin, N.Y.) nabbed his first points of the game with a few big play sequences sinking a deep three-pointer to chase the tails of the RWU Hawks 34-25 as they closed out the first half. 
  • Sophomore Zach Skinner (Berlin, Conn.) opens weaving past a defender dropping the ball off the glass and into the hoop in their first possession. Freshman Reggie Selden (Franklinville, N.J.) made his presence known dropping a clutch three to close the lead to just four behind RWU Hawks. RWU Ryan Higgins was quick to answer launching up a three to halt Hartford's momentum, bringing their lead to ten. Sophomore Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y. was solid all-over the as he grabs an offensive rebound and without hesitation sinks a jumpshot claiming his 13th point of the match. RWU was perfect from beyond the arc when it was important big plays made by Ashton Leclerc and Will Macdonald, continuing their lead 62-47 with 7:30 remaining. The Hartford Hawks answered with a 5-0 run key plays made by Brown and Skinner. As the final minutes approaches RWU strengthened their lead sinking every opportunity they were given. RWU Hawks pulled away with the win 77-63.
 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Petion had a season-high 21 points in tonight's match-up (8-17 FG, 2-5 3PT, 5-6 FT) along with six rebounds. Brown was the next leader for the Hawks with ten points (4-7 FG, 2-5 3PT, 0-0 FT) and four rebounds. Santos also was solid for the Hawks with eight points (3-9 FG, 0-4 3PT, 2-2 FT) and nabbed three rebounds off the glass. 
  • The RWU Hawks leader Mac Annus claimed an impressive 21 points (6-12 FG, 3-8 3PT, 6-6 FT) and grabbed four rebounds.
  • Hartford Hawks dominated in the paint tonight with 40 of 63 points, while RWU Hawks only had 22.
