Hawks Fall Against Springfield College 8-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- Hartford women's field hockey team was defeated by Springfield College in a non-conference match Wednesday evening. They were defeated with a final score of 8-0. The Hawks have now fallen to 2-6 on the season.

Rapid Recap:

  • The first quarter was Springfield's from the jump. Freshman goalkeeper Carolyn Somers (Worcester, Mass.) had no time to rest, as the Pride ambushed her almost immediately, securing the opening goal in the first minute of action thanks to Clare Moore. The pressure from Springfield did not let up as the Pride secured two more goals before the end of the quarter, leaving the score 3-0 after the first.
  • The second quarter was more dominance from Springfield, peppering shots on goal, though Somers did well to protect her goal, netting multiple saves early in the frame. The Hawks were able to get an offensive move started in the period thanks to senior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.), though it did not mount a goal on the scoreboard. No goals were scored by either side during the quarter, and they went into halftime 3-0.
  • The Pride came out of halftime firing on all cylinders, netting another goal early into the third quarter thanks to Hailey Gaydos. They did not stop there, pouring on the pressure even more and putting another three goals past Somers during the period. The quarter was punctuated by Gaydos netting her second of the quarter and third of the match. The quarter ended with the Hawks trailing 7-0.
  • Hartford turned to goalie Nicole Ciampa (Jefferson, N.J.) to start the fourth. The sophomore netted four saves during the period, including a very impressive double save early into action. Late in the contest, Camdyn Despres was able to net Springfield their eighth and final goal of the contest. Full time rang and the final score was 8-0 in favor of the Pride.


Inside the Numbers:

  • The two keepers for the Hawks combined for 10 total saves, Somers finishing with six in 45 minutes of play and Ciampa grabbing four for herself in 15 minutes.
  • Costa had the only shot recorded for the Hawks, though they were out-shot 20-1 and 18-0 on shots on goal.
  • The Hawks were only able to yield one penalty corner to Springfield's 17.
