Hawks Clinch First Round Bye with Dominant 7-0 Win Over Curry College

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford women's soccer team concluded their regular season of play in dominant fashion as they defeated Curry College 7-0 this Tuesday afternoon. Hartford's win tonight gives them a first round bye in post-season Conference of New England (CNE) tournament play.

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks wasted no time setting the tone, junior Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.) ignited the offense just 28 seconds in, burying a finish to the low right corner off a perfect set up from freshman Anastasia Nerney (Glocester, R.I.). The Colonels attempted to silence their momentum taking several shots at senior goalkeeper Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.) but she stood tall making key saves for Hartford. Hartford took control of this match in the 16th minute putting together consecutive goals in a 35 second quick succession. It was Nerney this time with a goal of her own from an assist from senior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.), the second goal was a solo goal from Brush yet again, Hawks now sitting comfortable with an early 3-0 lead. The Hawks stayed relentless in their attack, seven shots at net within the next five minutes lead to their fourth goal off the foot of Opdenbrouw receiving an assist from freshman Sophia Coer (Thomaston, Conn.) in the 24th minute. The Hawks were not done yet and closed out the first half cushioning their lead to now five as Nerney found junior Morgan Egan (East Granby, Conn.) to find the back of the net.
  • Already up 5-0 at halftime, the Hawks maintained their pressure to start the second. Sophomore Olivia Flores (Trumbull, Conn.) entered the game with fire extending the lead in the 63rd minute, finishing a perfectly worked play with assists from Coer and Brush in crowded corner kick. The scoring wrapped up late as senior Mayson Massaro (Sarasota, Fla.) splits the defenders to find sophomore Caitlyn Kanter (Phoenix, Ariz.) who rolls the final goal right by the Curry goalkeeper to cap off Hartford's impressive offensive feat.

Post Game Press:
"Our goal is to just continue what we wanted to do at the beginning of the year, win the conference tournament and to get to the NCAAs," said junior Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.). "It feels great to return to the pitch after the last two games I missed, I love our team, I love playing with every body, the biggest thing was just to get back on the field with my teammates. I was so excited for my teammates that claimed their first collegiate goals today, being in their shoes at one point freshman year, it is the most amazing feeling and you just feel like you are on top of the world and I know they will just keep rolling from here."
