Hawks Fall to Suffolk University in Four Sets 3-1

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - The Hawks took on Suffolk University at home this weekend, as part of Hawktober Weekend on the University of Hartford Campus. The Hawks would end up losing this matchup in four sets 3-1.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Rams of Suffolk would take an early advantage, going up 7-2 in the opening minutes of the first set. Hartford would bring the score within three coming off a kill from junior Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) and a handful of errors from the Rams. The Suffolk lead would continue to grow, however as they found themselves leading 15-8. The Hawks would come back with three unanswered, with a kill from freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo.) and a service ace from junior Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) Suffolk would continue to keep a cushion but Hartford would come back with a 5-0 run with a pair of kills coming from Je. Murphy and a service ace from Johnson, bringing the match to 19-17 in favor of the Rams. This late push would not be enough as Suffolk would take set one 25-22.
  • Both teams would trade blows in the early stages of the second set, until the Rams went on a 7-1 run putting them up 11-5. Hartford would come right back with a 8-2 run tying the game at 13 a piece, with big contributions from freshman Mattea Cosby (Enfield, Conn.) by way of a service ace, as well as kills from junior Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) and Legassey. Suffolk would respond in a big way scoring five unanswered, and ultimately pulling away to win the second set 25-18. 
  • The Hawks would jump to an early 7-3 lead in the third set, with kills coming from both Je. and Jo. Murphy. The Rams would immediately respond with a run of their own, as they would take the lead 12-8. Hartford would fire back in a big way as they would push a 22-18 lead with kills from Johnson, sophomore Emily Theobald (Verona, N.J.). Jo. Murphy would clinch three straight kills and secure the third set for the Hawks 25-22.
  • Hartford would maintain an early advantage in the fourth set, securing a 14-7 lead with a pair of service aces from senior Kylee Connnally (Dallas, Texas.) and kills from Theobald, Johnson, Jo. Murphy and Je. Murphy. The Hawk lead would grow, as they would find themselves up 20-16. However, the Rams would make a late push and a 7-1 run would secure the set, and the match 25-24.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jo. Murphy lead the Hawks in kills with 15, Je. Murphy was next with 10, Johnson secured eight, and Theobald finished with two. 
  • Cosby lead the Hawks with 18 assists through the four sets, Connally followed close behind with 11.
  • Je. Murphy finished with the most blocks in the match with six blocks assisted and one block solo,  junior Nyanakuak Piok (East Syracuse, N.Y.) was next in the block category with four blocks assisted.

The Hawks go on the road to the Commonwealth to take on Curry College in Milton, Mass. on Wednesday, Oct 8th, with first serve set for 6:00PM.
