#5 Western New England Defeats #4 Hartford to Advance to CNE Semifinals

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford men's soccer team fell in the first round of the Conference of New England (CNE) Tournament to Western New England by a 2-1 final in extra time.

Rapid Recap:

  • The Golden Bears took charge of this game early with the first test at net by Nigel Martin but Hartford's defense stood strong. Goalkeeper senior Ryan Lunn (Southington, Conn.) made a diving save to punch out Ben Riley's attempt. In the 11th minute, sophomore David Czubat (Rocky Hill, Conn.) applied the pressure to WNE's defense to force an error, junior Austin Murawski (Rocky Hill, Conn.) won back the possession and found the feet of sophomore Jared Noble (Neconset, N.Y.) who buried it to give the Hawks a 1-0 early lead. The Golden Bears were unfazed as in the next 40 seconds they caught the Hawks on their heels forcing Lunn to making a jumping clearance just under the crossbar to maintain their 1-0 lead. WNE continued to apply pressure to the Hawks but were unable to convert before the end of the half and the 1-0 lead stood.
  • Tensions rose in this second half with yellow card going to the Western New England bench in the 51st minute. Two more yellow cards would be shown in the ten minutes following as the teams still did not have another chance as we entered the 61st minute. In the 69th minute the Golden Bears struck as Tyler Lewis finished a cross from Jacob Dounetosaco to equalize. Marcus Joshi continued the Golden Bears domination with a chance in the 76th minute forcing a huge save from Lunn. In the 78th minute junior Ron Pallilo (Stony Brook, N.Y.) picked up a second yellow card with a costly foul to give the Hawks down to 10 men. Lunn would make two more huge saves as the clock hit zero as the game stayed at 1-1.
