WENHAM, Mass. The Hawks traveled north this Saturday to take on the Gordon College Fighting Scots in the commonwealth. The Fighting Scots would come out on top 91-80 at the end of regulation.
Rapid Recap:
- Gordon would open the scoring with a layup, but Hartford would come right back with a three pointer from freshman Emma O'Hare (Drexel Hill, Pa.). Both teams flashed some stellar defense as over a minute passed without a bucket, freshman Maddie MacCannell (Portsmouth, N.H.) would knock down two free throws to stop the drought for both teams, and putting Hartford up 5-3. Sophomore Ava Naszimento (Seacaucus, N.J.) flushed home a layup, to give the Hawks a 7-4 advantage at the seven minute mark of the quarter. Hartford woul maintain their lead with MacCannell knocking home an and-one and converting on the free throw to put the Hawks up six. The Fighting Scots mounted a 13-0 run late in the first quarter that would put them up, with a minute and a half to go. Sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) would continue the fight for the Hawks putting up a three with nine seconds left in the first quarter that put the Hawks within one 24-23. Sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) came out the second quarter swinging, hitting a big three to put the Hawks up 26-24. Gordon would maintain a lead throughout most of the second quarter, as Naszimento would continue to dominate finishing the half with 12 pts. The fighting Scots would end the half in the driver's seat up 46-39.
- Marchesani would open up the second half with another big time triple to cut the lead to four. O'Hare would follow that up with an old fashioned three point play as she converted the and-one. Gordon would retaliate with two three-pointers of their own, extending their league to seven, this lead would extend to 13 with three minutes to play in the third. Sophomore Sidnee Bowden (Canton, Ohio) knocked down a triple, and Naszimento would end the half with back to back buckets for the Hawks, as through three quarters the Hawks trailed 69-60. Sabia would knock down a jumper to open up the fourth and final quarter of play, cutting the Gordon lead to seven. But, the Fighting Scots continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal as they would find themselves ahead by double digits once again 74-64 with just over eight minutes to play. Marchesani would knock down yet another three-ball to cut the lead to single digits, and a putback layup from freshman Maya Okoro (Frisco, TX) would bring the Hawks within five. Gordon, however would continue to push back as they would once again go up by 10, 81-71 with five minutes to play. Gordon would maintain this lead throughout the remainder of play, keeping the Hawks at bay with a final score of 91-80.
Inside the Numbers:
- Naszimento lead the Hawks in scoring with 24 points (12-15 FG, 0-1 FT) to go along with 11 REB, two AST, one steal, and one block. Bowden finished the night with her season-high 14 PTS (5-10 FG, 1-4 3PT, 3-3 FT), as well as tallying eight boards, and three assists. Marchesani ended with 12 PTS (4-12 FG, 4-8 3PT) with one board, two assists, and a steal. O'Hare finished with seven points (2-14 FG, 1-6 3PT, 2-3 FT) to go with one steal, three assists, and two rebounds.
- Ami Rivera lead the game in scoring with 30 PTS (7-13 FG, 4-7 3PT, 12-14 FT) for Gordon.
- Hartford only missed two free throws throughout the game going 12-14 as a team.
- Hartford's bench outscored Gordon's 32-14.
