BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Hawks women's basketball season ended on Tuesday night as the Hawks fell to the University of New England in the Conference of New England (CNE) first round by a 63-38 final.
Rapid Recap:
- Freshman Emma O'Hare (Drexel Hill, Pa.) scored the basket of the game to give Hartford he lead after 2:38 minutes of game action. The Nor'Easters would respond with a 8-0 run to take the lead stopped by a basket by freshman Maddie MacCannell (Portsmouth, N.H.). The University of New England would score seven points in the frame to lead 15-4 after one.
- Sophomore Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) made two shots from the charity stripe to kick off the second quarter. The Nor'Easters extended the lead to 21-6 before freshman Maya Okoro (Frisco, Texas) finished a layup. O'Hare finished a layup to kick start a 6-0 spurt capped off with four points by freshman Mackenzie Hohulin (Plymouth, Mass.) as the Hawks trailed by eight with 1:49 to play. UNE closed the half strong rattling off nine-straight to lead 32-15 into the break.
- Sophomore Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) netted a three to start the third quarter but once again the home team responded with a 8-0 run. Sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) finished a layup to stop the run trailing 40-20. The teams traded baskets with sophomore Kendall Rieman (Chicago, Ill.) finishing a layup followed by another for Okoro and Hohulin as the Hawks trailed 48-29. The teams would trade free throws in the final 10 seconds as the score was 50-31 headed into the final quarter.
- Blevins knocked down another triple to kick off scoring in the fourth quarter, but again the Nor'Easters battled back with seven-straight points. Hohulin finished another layup for the Hawks late in the contest, but UNE would hold on to the comfortable lead for the win.
Inside the Numbers:
- O'Hare finished with eight points (2-7 FG, 0-3 3PT, 4-4 FT) to go with four boards and a steal. Hohulin contributed eight points (3-9 FG, 0-3 3PT, 2-2 FT) and six rebounds. Blevins added six points (2-7 FG, 2-4 3PT) and a rebound, while Sabia tallied five points (1-7 FG, 0-2 3PT, 3-4 FT) and five rebounds.
- The Nor'Easters had four double-digit scorers in Faye Veilleux (11), Gabby Soter (11), Sydney Jenisch (10) and Maddy Werner (10) in the win.
- UNE had a whopping 31 free throws in the win making 20 from the line, while Hartford went 12-14 from the charity stripe. The Hawks had advantages on the glass (49-40), paint (20-12) and from reserve points (22-14) in the loss however UNE knocked down five more three-pointers and had a 19-6 points off turnovers margin.
