WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford men's basketball team could not hold on at home against Nichols College on Wednesday night falling to Nichols College 94-82.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks jumped ahead by a 6-2 margin with a pair of buckets by sophomore Kaosi Chijioke (Atlanta, Ga.). Chijioke kept the Hawks in front drilling a three as the lead was 11-7. The teams continued to trade baskets with back-to-back finishes by sophomore Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The Bison rallied back to tie things up at 20-20. A driving finish by sophomore Jared Similien (Brunswick, Maine) kept the Hawks in front, followed by a 5-0 run by sophomore Jaylen Brown (Baldwin, N.Y.) as the lead was back to 31-26. Another 8-2 run by the Hawks with triples for freshman Reggie Selden (Franklinville, N.J.) and Brown kept the advantage at six points. Nichols finished the half strong with seven-straight to close the half tied with the Hawks at 45-45.
- The Bison slowly jumped ahead 51-47, but a quick seven-point spurt with a finish and a pair of free throws by junior Drew Stack (Madison, N.J.) and a three by Chijioke. Nichols established the lead in the next five minutes pulling ahead 68-60, Stack drilled a triple, but the Bison put two more baskets to extend the lead to nine points with 7:11 to play. The Bison pushed the lead to double-digits at the 5:45 mark of the second half, Brown netted a three with 4:12 to play as the lead was cut to seven, but Nichols held strong winning 94-82.
Inside the Numbers:
- Brown led the offense off the bench with 18 points (4-9 FG, 3-4 3PT, 7-7 FT) to go with six rebounds and two steals. Chijioke tallied 15 points (6-16 FG, 2-5 3PT, 1-2 FT), seven rebounds and three assists. Selden added 14 points (4-12 FG, 2-4 3PT, 4-4 FT) to go with four assists and a board.
- Javen Flowers-Smith led the Bison with 22 points (9-21 FG, 2-9 3PT, 2-7 FT), eight assists and five rebounds. Oliver St. Louis added 19 points (6-9 FG, 0-2 3PT, 7-8 FT), eight rebounds and two blocks.
- The Bison dominated the paint outscoring the Hawks 60-30 in the painted area. Hartford's bench played well with 22 bench points compared to just three from Nichols.
