Hawks Fly by Crosstown Rival Trinity in Connecticut Opener

HARTFORD, CONN. The Hawks made the trip across town to take on the Trinity Bantam in what would be an abbreviated home opening double header  for the Hawks. In game one the Hawks would come out on top 2-1 in 6 and a half innings. 

Game 1:

  • Sophomore Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) got the start on the bump for the Hawks, only allowing three hits through the first four innings. 
  • Hartford opened up scoring in the bottom of the third inning as junior JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) singled into CF and sophomore Cam Boardman (Bradford, Vt.)  came around to score from second to put the Hawks on the board first. Later in the inning Romatzick would advance on a failed pick off attempt and Ben Schulz (Berlin, Conn.) would hit a sacrifice fly to score Romatzick giving Hartfprd a 2-0 lead.
  • Bubba would finish the game after six scoreless innings, and in his place sophomore Julian Rondon (Bardonia, N.Y.). Trinity would mount a one-run comeback late coming off a triple from Dylan Schnitzer but Rondon would close the game out for Hartford as a fly ball in foul territory would find the glove of junior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) for the final out in the top of the sixth.
On the Mound:
  • Bubba made the start for the Hawks and threw six innings, allowing zero runs on four hits, one walk, to go with five strikeouts. Rondon came in for him in the top of the sixth inning, throwing one inning and giving up one hit to go with one strikeout, one run, and one error in three at bats.

At the Plate:

  • Romatzick continues to rake for Hartford going 1-3 with an RBI, and a run scored. Junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) also went 1-3 with a single, sophomore Tyler Shannon went 1-2 with a single.

Game 2:
In game two of the double header it would be the Hawks who again come out on top taking both games in the double header. The second game started at 12:30PM and saw the Hawks come out on top 10-5 in 6 and a half innings.

Rapid Recap:

  • Both teams got things going early on as in the top of the first inning Trinity scored two runs coming off a triple from William Sawyer and a score off a Hartford error. Later in the bottom of the first inning junior Ben Schulz (Berlin, Conn.) would rifle a ball over the fence in left center scoring two for the Hawks and evening the score at two.
  • In the bottom of the second inning Hartford extended their lead as junior JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) would knock in an RBI single putting the Hawks up 3-2. A few at bats later with the bases loaded, junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) would hit a 3-run RBI triple putting Hartford up 6-2 through two. 

  • Trinity would fire back in the next inning with a long ball from Dylan Schnitzer that would bring in 3 runs. In the bottom of the inning. Hartford would retaliate with runs of their own, as junior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) would score on a balk. A few at bats later sophomore Peyton West (South Windsor, Conn.) would pummel an RBI double down the right field line to put the Hawks up 8-5. In the next at back Romatzick would again come up big for Hartford knocking in west from second with an RBI triple.

  • In the bottom of the fourth inning Mangiameli would knock in graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) with an RBI double, and extend the Hartford lead 5-10.


On the Mound:
  • Freshman Ryan Sheehy (Shelton, Conn.) got the start on the bump for the Hawks throwing four innings, giving up three hits, and five runs to go along with nine strikeouts and zero walls in 17 at bats.
  • Senior Luke Rier (Miami, Fla.)  came in following Sheehy and threw one inning, striking out one and giving up one walk, in three at bats.

  • Freshman Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) finished the game throwing one inning with two strikeouts in just three at bats.

  • Rounding things out for the Hawks was junior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) who threw one inning, seeing three batters and secured the final three outs for Hartford.

At the Plate:

  • Romatzick continued to light it up at the dish going 3-4 with two RBI and two and two runs scored.

  • Schulz got the bats going with a two run bomb in the first inning, as well as scoring two runs and two RBI, he finished the game 1-3.

  • Ciccone finished the day 1-4 with three RBI.

  • Santiago finished the day 2-4 with one run scored. 


Up Next:
The Hawks will travel to Newport News, VA to take on Christopher Newport University on Friday Mar. 7 in a double header starting at 11:30 AM.
