BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team dropped the third non-conference game of the year on Saturday falling to UMass Boston by a 7-5 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Beacons jumped ahead early scoring the first three goals over the first 10 minutes of game action. Sophomore Nick Forgione (Denville, N.J.) registered the first goal on a feed from sophomore Ethan Hunt (Skaneateles, N.Y.) as the Hawks trailed 3-1 after a quarter.
- UMass Boston registered the first goal of the second to lead 4-1 with 12:33 to play in the first half. Freshman Gavin Pelletier (Southington, Conn.) gave the Hawks the answer on an assist by senior Ryan Varano (Avon, Conn.). Sophomore Maxton McPhee (Dudley, Mass.) continued the Hartford comeback besting the goalkeeper to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Hawks would continue the momentum as Forgione netted his second of the day this time from graduate student Jake Ojert (Doylestown, Pa.) as the game was knotted at 4-4 with 5:50 to play in the first half. The Beacons would take the lead and hold the 5-4 advantage into halftime.
- The third quarter saw zero goals scored over the 15 minutes of gameplay. James Boldy would make two saves, while sophomore CJ Ledwick (Falmouth, Mass.) would stop three shots.
- The Beacons would open second-half scoring with 13:48 to play in the game extending the lead 6-4. UMass Boston would score a seventh goal with 11:46 to play. Hartford would finally get across the fifth goal with McPhee besting the keeper. The Hawks would take three more shots in the game, but the Beacons held strong to earn the 7-5 win.
Inside The Numbers:
- Forgione and McPhee each tallied two goals in the loss, while Pelletier added the fifth goal.
- Varano, Ojert and Hunt each added the assists in the game.
- Junior Tobias Ballester (Westwood, N.J.) and senior Nick DiDomizio (Cheshire, Conn.) each led the defense with two caused turnovers.
- Sophomore specialist Ben Costanzo (Chester, Conn.) finished 9-15 from the faceoff dot.
- In the cage Ledwick made 14 saves in the loss as his record drops to 0-2.
- Caesar Hendricks led the Beacons with a hat-trick, while goalie James Boldy made 11 saves.
