Hawks Win Official Home Opener vs. Eastern Connecticut State University

The Hartford Hawks secured a win in their home opener Wednesday, defeating the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors 7-5

Rapid Recap: 
  • Hawks third baseman junior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) drove in the Hawks first run of the game in the first inning on a single, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Hawks doubled their lead in the third inning, as junior John Russell (Eastchester, N.Y.) reached base on an error, allowing catcher and graduate Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn) to score.
  • The Warriors tied the game in the 4th inning, as two fielders choices brought the score to 2-2.
  • The Hawks responded with two runs of their own in the fourth, giving Hartford a 4-2 lead. 
  • A double for Eastern Connecticut cut the Hawks lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning.
  • Hawks infielder and junior Joshua Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y.) singled down the left side, scoring the Hawks 5th run of the game, before sophomore J.J. Romatzick (Stratford, Conn) scored on an error, giving the Hawks a 6-3 lead. 
  • A double for junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn) scored Kaplan, giving the Hawks a 7-3 lead entering the top of the sixth.
  • Two runs for Eastern Connecticut were not enough, as freshman Ryan Sheehy (Shelton, Conn) earned his first collegiate save, as the Hawks held on to win 7-5
On the Mound:
  • Eight different pitchers took the mound for the Hawks, with sophomore Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) starting off with a clean first inning. 
  • The Hawks went the first three innings without allowing a hit, with Freshman Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn) and sophomore Sam Smith (Branford, Conn) each followed with scoreless innings
  • Sophomore Tyler Blumetti (Southington, Conn) earned the win in the contest, going 1.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, recording one strikeout
  • Sheehy records his first collegiate save, allowing one run on two hits over the final two innings of the game.
At the Plate: 
  • Kaplan led the Hawks in offensive production, going 3-for-5 and driving in a run in the fifth inning.
  • Joseph drove in two runs in the contest, going 2-for-4 with two singles. 
  • Four different Hawks recording RBIs in the contest. 
Up Next:
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, March 15th, facing off against Clark University at Fiondella Field in a doubleheader. The first pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 11:00 A.M.
