WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford baseball team started a busy week of action on Tuesday defeating cross-town rival the University of Saint Joseph by a 11-4 final on the road.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks and Blue Jays stayed silent through two innings. Hartford took the lead in the top of the third as junior Joshua Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y.) hit an RBI ground out to score freshman Nico DiGioia (Hamden, Conn.). USJ countered in the bottom of the third on a RBI ground out of their own. The Hawks added three more runs in the top of the fourth as sophomore Tyler Shannon (Madison, N.J.) singled to score graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) who reached on a single. Freshman Evin Curtiss (Simsbury, Conn.) followed it up with a triple to right center to score DiGioia and Shannon to extend the visitor lead.
- In the top of the fifth the Hawks continued to hit getting a RBI single by junior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) to score junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) who singled and stole second. The offense got another in the sixth as Kaplan picked up another ribby on a fielder's choice to score Shannon again to push the lead to 6-1 after six.
- The seventh featured an offensive explosion as Santiago launched a homer to left field. DiGioia followed with a no-doubter of his own to score Joseph and Shannon and get the lead to 10-1. Curtiss would add an insurance run in the top half of the ninth doubling home DiGioia. The Blue Jays did not go out without a fight scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a three-run blast by JJ Fox, but the Hawks would win 11-4.
On the Mound:
- Freshman Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) picked up his first collegiate win tossing six innings of work allowing one run on two hits to go with eight strike outs. Sophomore Tyler Blumetti (Southington, Conn.) came in relief throwing two shut down innings with a pair of punch outs. Freshman Ryan Sheehy (Shelton, Conn.) closed things out throwing a single inning allowing three runs with a strike out.
At the Plate:
- DiGioia led the offensive effort going 2-for-4 with his second collegiate homer, four runs scored and three RBIs. Santiago went 3-for-5 with a long ball, a double and two runs scored. Shannon went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a RBI. Curtiss added a 3-for-5 game with a triple, double and three ribbys.
