Hartford Split Double Header with Wentworth Institute of Technology

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. The Hawks of Hartford took on the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards, in which the Hawks would serve the visitor in their own ballpark. The first game of two kicked off at 11AM in which Hartford would take the loss 1-3. The second game would start at 1:45PM and would result in a 3-1 Hartford victory, splitting the series at one a piece.
Game 1:
Rapid Recap:
  • The first game would be a pitcher's duel as the first run would not come across until the third inning in which an RBI single for Wentworth would put them ahead early. In the same inning the Leopards would knock in another RBI single. In the next at bat with the bases loaded Wentworth would come across again coming from a HBP.
  • In the fourth inning Hartford would try and rally with a SAC groundout for junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) would score graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.). However, they would not be able to add any more across and Wentworth would take the victory in an abbreviated home game.
On the Mound:
  • Sophomore Anthony Bubba (Jefferson,NJ) started on the bump for Hartford he would throw seven innings giving up eight hits on five strikeouts, and no walks in 19 batters faced. Senior Luke Rier (Miami, Fla.) came into relief for an inning of work in which he struck out two of three batters faced giving up no hits, no runs, and no walks.
At the Plate:
  • Santiago finished the day 2-4 and scoring the lone run for the Hawks. Ciccone knocked in Hartford's only RBI. Sophomore J.J. Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) kept his 17-game hitting streak alive going 1-4 in the first game. Sophomore Alex Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) slashed 1 for 5 in game 1 junior Jeremy Mangiamelli (Middlefield, Conn.) went 1-3 with a walk.

Rapid Recap:
  • In the first inning with runners in scoring position a wild pitch from Wentworth would score Popovich from third. In the same at bat another wild pitch would score Santiago from third. Giving Hartford an early 2-0 lead.
  • In the sixth inning Wentworth would get their first run on the board as with two outs they would come across on a wild pitch.
  • In the ninth inning, junior Josh Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y.) would knock in an insurance run for Hartford by way of an RBI single scoring junior John Russell (Eastchester, N.Y.) and extending the Hartford lead 3-1.
On the Mound:
 Freshman Ryan Sheehy (Shelton, Conn.)  saw six innings for Hartford getting the start on the mound for the Hawks, going six innings giving up one run, with three hits, three walks, and eight strikeouts. Junior Michael Featherstone came in for relief throwing three innings, giving up one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts.
 
At the Plate:
  • Santiago finished the day going 2-5 with a double and coming across for a second time on the day. Freshman Nico Digioia (Hamden, Conn.) finished the day going 2-3 as he continues to see the ball well. Romatzick went 1-4 further extending his hitting streak. Kaplan went 1-4 and notched the games only RBI.

"After falling short in the first game, I knew I had to set the tone on the mound, and my team would have my back with the bats, and that's exactly what happened. Feels good to pick up the win." Sheehy had to say after the games.
