Hartford Hawks Softball opened up their Conference of New England (CNE) slate by splitting against the Roger Williams University Hawks in Saturday's Doubleheader.
Game 1: Hartford def RWU 7-3
Rapid Recap:
- Senior Olivia Wolk (Sugarloaf, Penn) scored the first run of the game, driving in Junior Gia Miccio (Bellemore, N.Y.) to give Hartford a 1-0 lead. Roger Williams retaliated with a strong second, scoring two runs and taking a 2-1 lead.
- Hartford tied the game at 2-2 with 4 walks in the second inning, including a pinch hit walk for sophomore Adele Beebe (Sacramento, Calif)
- Roger Williams singled home the go-ahead run, giving RWU a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3rd. Sophomore Sydney Matz (Ellington, Conn) stole home in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 3-3
- Wolk scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning, hitting a single and advancing to third base on an error by the RWU Centerfielder, Miccio scored to give Hartford a 4-3 lead
- Sophomore Alexis Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif) provided a needed insurance run, scoring senior Sarah Serrano (Windsor, Conn) on a double in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the Hartford lead to 5-3. Wolk beat out a dribbler, reaching first, RWUs third error of the day allowed Sealey to score, giving Hartford a 6-3 lead.
- Freshman Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.) pinch hit and scored Wolk on a single, as the Hawks lead was pushed to 7-3
In the Circle:
- Junior Carly Mayhood (Andover, N.J.) earned her fourth win of the season, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out seven, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, recording a career high 128 pitches
- Sophomore Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif) took over in the seventh inning, recording the save as the Hawks held on to win 7-3
At the Plate:
- Wolk finished game one going 3-for-4, driving in 3 runs-batted-in and scoring once.
- Hartford drew eight walks in the contest, their second most of the season
Game 2: Hawks fall to RWU 4-2
Rapid Recap:
- Roger Williams started hot early, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning Freshman Lucy Lembo (Albany, N.Y.) hit sacrifice fly scored Beebe, cutting the RWU Lead to 3-1.
- In the 2nd inning Sarah Serrano launched a double to left-center field, scoring Ella Zobel from second and bringing the score to 3-2 RWU.
- Roger Williams extended their lead in the fourth inning, as a walk gave RWU their fourth run of the game, before a lineout to junior Anita Farkash (Seaford, N.Y) started an unassisted double play, keeping the score at 4-2
On the Circle:
- Zobel pitched four innings in the contest, allowing four runs on five hits, while striking out six in the loss.
- Sealey entered game two in relief, pitching three innings, allowing just two hits and getting one punch-out.
- Roger Williams pitcher Keira Quadros pitched a complete game, stifling the Hawks offense as RWU took the win 4-2 final.
At the Plate:
- Lucy Lembo and Sarah Serrano drove in the Hawks two RBIs on the afternoon, as the Hawks only recorded four hits in game two.
The Hawks record goes to 9-8 overall and 1-1 in Conference Play following the doubleheader split.
Post Game Press:
"The first win was good. It felt good to get the first conference win under out belt. The second game was shaky, we weren't as focused as we needed to be. Now with us being in conference play, we need to be more intentional and focused moving forward."
Up Next:
Hartford Softball heads to Dudley, Massachusetts on Sunday, March 30th to face Nichols College in a doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 12:00 P.M. Game two is expected to begin at 2:00 P.M.
