Hartford Hawks Fall to United States Coast Guard Academy at Dunkin’ Park

The Coast Guard Bears scored seven runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 13-7 win over the Hartford Hawks at Dunkin Park on Thursday night in a non-conference game. 

Nathan Stafford led the outburst with a three-run double to make it 9-3 for the Coast Guard. The Bears did most of the damage in the top of the sixth inning with no outs. Rick Barkley contributed to the outburst with an RBI double. 

The Hawks put up single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The Hawks got their first run in the bottom of the third inning, thanks to an RBI single by sophomore JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.). Drew Basque for the Bears  singled to center field to score Wyatt Duthe in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Alex Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) singled, bringing home junior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.) in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Josh Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y.) reached first on an error and scored unearned in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, at the end of six innings, the Bears were nursing an 11-4 lead. 

The Hawks added another run in the bottom of the eighth when Junior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) scored on a ground out, making it 13-5 Coast Guard. Mangiameli finished the night going 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored, a double, and an RBI. Junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) went one for four with a run scored and an RBI.

The Bears added to their lead in the top of the ninth inning on a solo home run by Connor Cilento to make it 13-5. Mangiameli made it 13-6 in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single. The Hawks added a bases-loaded walk to make it a 13-7 final.

On the Mound: 
  • Freshman Jeffrey Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) allowed one hit but claimed one strikeout tonight in his one inning pitched. Next to take the mound is freshman Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) he matched Blake's stats and allowed one hit, threw one strikeout and one pitch hit the Bears. Senior Teague Mulcahy (Bayonne, N.J.) stepped up for the next inning facing three batters, sophomore Tyler Blumetti (Southington, Conn.) took the loss in today's match-up, now going 2-2. In Blumetti's one inning pitched he allowed three hits, three earned runs, one strikeout, and walked one Bear with a hit pitch. Freshman Michael Grego (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) was the next to pitch for the Hawks and in his one inning pitched he allowed one hit and one walk. Sophomore Sam Smith (Teaneck, N.J.) was on the mound for a brief period while allowing three hits, five runs, and one walk. Freshman Evan Gentile (Berlin, Conn.) pitched for the next two innings allowing five hits, three runs, facing 10 batters. Senior Luke Rier (Miami, Fla.) took the mound next and three two quick strikeouts for the Hawks in his one inning pitched. Junior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) closed out this match-up for the Hawks allowing one hit, one run, and striking out two Bears to end this game.
At the Plate:
  • Mangiameli led the offense going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Ciccone went 1-for-4 today with a run scored and one RBI. Romatzick also went 1-for-4 with one hit and an RBI. Popovich matched his teammates hitting 1-for-4 and claiming a ribby.

The Hawks will host Conference of New England (CNE) opponent Roger Williams University this Sunday at 12:30 p.m. for a double-header, second game kicking off at 3:30 p.m.
