MILTON, Mass. - The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team improved to 2-1 in Conference of New England (CNE) play on Wednesday defeating Curry College by a 7-3 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks jumped ahead early as sophomore Michael Novotny (Cornwall, N.Y.) finished a goal assisted by sophomore Maxton McPhee (Dudley, Mass.) after just 2:49 of game action. The defense stayed strong only allowing one single shot in the first quarter for the Colonels. The lead jumped to 2-0 as Novotny found junior Aidan Kemp (South Orange, N.J.) who found the back of the cage. Sophomore CJ Ledwick (Falmouth, Mass.) made his one save of the quarter as Hartford led 2-0 headed into the second.
- Curry got back into the game scoring to cut the deficit to 2-1, but 30 seconds later sophomore Aidan Ezra (New Milford, Conn.) rocketed a shot past the keeper on a feed from freshman Shaun Wright (Frederick, Md.) as Hawks led 3-1. Ledwick would make three more saves, leading to the fourth goal for Hartford as Novotny got his second goal again from McPhee with 5:39 to play in the half. Kemp would get his second tally of the day with a minute left in the half as the Hawks led 5-1 going into half.
- The Colonels got their second goal of the game 57 seconds into the second half as they trailed 5-2. Novotny registered his hat-trick to respond for Hartford on an assist by senior Ryan Varano (Avon, Conn.). The Hawks kept things going as sophomore Nick Forgione (Denville, N.J.) scored from sophomore Ethan Hunt (Skaneateles, N.Y.) as the visitors established a 7-2 lead headed into the fourth quarter.
- The fourth quarter was highlighted by the defense as the Hawks would cause five turnovers in the quarter. Curry would get a score with 4:58 to play, but Hartford would cruise to the 7-3 win.

"We knew that we had to treat today like a business trip," said junior
Tim Votta (East Greenwich, R.I.). "We had to dominate the ground balls, play fast, and play for each other. We're still not satisfied and we are on to the next game."
Inside The Numbers:
- Votta led a defensive effort that caused 16 turnovers in the win. Tim had three causes with four ground balls. Sophomore Thomas Brunelli (Norwich, Conn.) added three caused turnovers with a pair of grounders.
- Offensively Novotny led the charge with three goals and an assist. Kemp tallied two scores and McPhee dished out two assists.
- Ledwick picked up the win in the cage making seven saves.
- Mac Kline led Curry with two goals in the loss.
