Hawks Take Down Nichols College

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hawks women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three games on Wednesday defeating Nichols College on the road by a 19-6 margin. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks raced to a 2-0 lead as sophomore Madison Olmstead (Wolcott, Conn.) netted back-to-back free positions three minutes in the game. Freshman Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.) kept the Hawks rolling scoring a third goal with 10:57 to play in the first quarter. Olmstead added another followed by a goal for sophomore Lauren Samela (Cheshire, Conn.) both assisted by senior Meghan Smith (Orange, Conn.) as the lead hit 5-0 midway through the first. Samela and Smith finished off the run as Hartford pushed the lead to 7-0, Nichols would get a goal with 1:44 to play in the quarter to finally get on the board as the Bison trailed by six after one. 
  • Sophomore Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.) and Samela kicked off the second quarter each scoring as the lead grew to 9-1. The Bison scored a second goal with 12:06 to play in the half, but McIntosh got the score back via a free position. McIntosh would score two more times as the lead hit double-digits at 12-2. Smith closed the first half adding the 13th goal for the Hawks. 
  • Nichols scored to kick off the third quarter, but the Hawks answered with a four goal run over the next 11 minutes highlighted by two more goals to Olmstead. The Bison would add a late score as the lead as 17-4 headed into the fourth. 
  • The Hawks continued to lead big in the fourth quarter as Nichols would get their fifth goal with 12:10 to play in the game. Hartford would get two more scores in the game with Olmstead and Zonin as the Hawks won 19-6. 
Post Game Press:
"We came out strong and fought till the end respectfully", said sophomore Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.). "There was a lot of hustle on all areas of the field and I'm so proud of our team for winning this game today!"

Inside The Numbers:
  •  Olmstead led the offense tallying eight points scoring six times with two helpers. McIntosh scored five times to go with two caused turnovers. Samela registered four goals, an assists and five draws. Smtih added two goals, two assists and seven draws. 
  • Defensively junior Shelby Frashure (Pasadena, Md.) caused two turnovers with a grounder. 
  • Sophomore Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) picked up the win going all 60 minutes stopping six shots in the win. 
Up Next:
The Hawks will host senior day and youth day on Saturday April 12th against the University of New England with a 12:00 PM start.
