Hawks Field Hockey Wins First Game in Program History 8-0 Over Elms College

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford field hockey team had its first ever game in program-history on Friday, defeating Elms College 8-0. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks took the lead as freshman Ava Lipson (Colchester, Vt.) rifled a shot past the goalie in the 6th minute. Hartford continued to stay on the attack with four shots in the next five minutes which were all stopped by Katelyn Volk. The Hawks got the second goal in the 13th minute as freshman Kyra Benard (Agawam, Mass.) tipped in a service by Lipson. Hartford would add a third goal in the first quarter as freshman Kyra Evans (Topsham, Maine) finished home a pass from Benard to cap off a great first 15 minutes. 
  • Two minutes into the second quarter the Hawks picked up a fourth goal as Lipson scored for the second time. After a couple of penalty corners, Hartford would get a fifth as senior Jaylene Soto (Bayville, N.J.) tapped home a score from Benard. The Hawks would try to get a sixth goal, but Volk made another save as Hartford led 5-0 at halftime. 
  • In the 38th minute the Hawks got a sixth goal to break the scoring in the second half as freshman Ashley Taylor (South Deerfield, Mass.) finished a corner on a feed from Lipson. Three minutes later the Hawks converted a seventh goal as Benard scored from Taylor as the home team led 7-0 with the final 15 minutes to play. 
  • Lipson would get the final goal for the Hawks in the 54th minute to complete the hat-trick. Hartford would complete the shutout as the Blazers would not even register a shot in the game. 
Post Game Press:
"It felt crazy to score the first and last goal of this game" said freshman Ava Lipson (Colchester, Vt.) "I could not have done it without the help of my team. The coaches do a really great job at supporting us and growing this team into what we've become."

Inside the Numbers:
  • Lipson led the Hawks registering eight points on three goals and two assists. Benard followed with two goals and two helpers. Taylor tallied a goal and an assist, while Soto and Evans added the other goals. 
  • Freshman Carolyn Somers (Worcester, Mass.) picked up the win going the first 30 minutes in the cage. Sophomore Nicole Ciampa (Jefferson, N.J.) played the third quarter and freshman Aubrey Paul (Verona, N.J.) closed the game in the fourth. 
  • Hartford out shot Elms 27-0 with 20 shots on target in the game. The Hawks added 14 penalty corners in the win.

The Hawks will host the University of Southern Maine on September 6th with a 2:00 PM start.
