Hawks Drop Season Opener in Four Set Loss to Salve Regina

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford volleyball team opened their 2025 campaign falling in four sets to Salve Regina University (25-22, 25-23, 25-14, 25-23). 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The first set started out as a back-and-forth affair with a 4-4 tie early on. The Hawks pulled away 11-4, thanks to three kills by senior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.). Salve Regina fought back, and the game once again tied up, this time at 14. The set remained close thanks to three kills from both junior Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) and freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo.), Seahawks pulled away to take the set 25-22.  
  • The second set also started in a close affair, as the score evened up at three early on. After an ace by senior Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas), Hartford rode a wave of momentum to take a 18-11 lead, after Jo. Murphy and Johnson combined for nine kills. Despite a late comeback attempt by Salve Regina, in which the lead was cut down to one point, the Hawks managed to hang on to win the set 25-23. 
  • The Seahawks jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead to open the third set. They extended that lead to 11-2 and later 18-7. Despite Hartford scoring a flurry of points late in the set, Salve Regina would take a dominant set win 25-14. 
  • Similarly to the first two sets, both teams would remain even to start the set, this time at five a piece. A pair of kills from Jo. Murphy and Johnson helped the Hawks to take a lead of a 9-6. The Seahawks slowly chipped at that lead, tying the game at 14. Salve Regina then went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. Jo. Murphy came alive, notching five kills to tie the game at 23. Despite the late comeback, the Seahawks pulled away to take the fourth set 25-23, and win the match. 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Offensively, Jo. Murphy led the way with 18 kills and a dig. Johnson notched 10 kills and three digs in her first collegiate game. 
  • Connally led the passing effort with 35 assists, whilst adding on a  pair of aces and 13 digs. 
  • On the defensive side, junior Emilie Hatje (Middlefield, Conn.) led the team with 17 digs, with freshman Lucy Dieterlen (Dallas, Texas) notching 11 digs of her own. 
  • Dieterlen debuted her Hartford career with two service aces and 11 digs.
  • Salve out killed the Hawks 51-41 and lead in hitting percentage .205 to .114 for the Hawks.
