Johnson's Clean Sheet Leads Hawks Women's Soccer Over St. Lawrence University 1-0

CANTON, N.Y. - The Hartford women's soccer team picked up its opening win of the season on Sunday defeating St. Lawrence University 1-0 behind six saves from senior Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.).

Rapid Recap:

  • The Saints tried to get an early goal in the first 10 minutes as a miscommunication in the back line, had Madison King-Thurber with a great chance. King-Thurber took the shot, but Johnson punched it over the bar to make the save. The Saints would get another chance in the 8th minute, but Johnson made a routine low save to keep the score at 0-0. Junior Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.) had the first chance for the Hawks in the 10th minute, but the shot was well high. Brush would miss the frame later in the coming minutes as the teams continued to go back and forth. Johnson punched another shot over the bar 24th minute as Meredith Donahue put a good shot on target. A free kick in the 28th minute generated the winning-goal for the Hawks as sophomore Angela Chávez (Glastonbury, Conn.) found the foot of senior Cameryn Wilkinson (Wethersfield, Conn.) who finished the shot past a diving Saints keeper. Johnson would make another save late in the first half as Hartford took the lead into the break.
  • The Saints tried to answer in the first minute out of break as Donahue got a shot on goal, but Johnson made the simple save. The possession favored the home team for the most part in the first 20 minutes as St. Lawrence would get another two shots on Johnson in the early going that were stopped. The Hartford offense struggled to generate chances as Brush had the lone shot in the second half missing wide. The defense did their job in the end holiding the score and the clean sheet victory at 1-0.
