Hawks Fall in Straight Sets to U.S Coast Guard Academy

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hawks took on the United States Coast Guard Academy on their home court and dropped the contest in three straight sets. (15-25, 19-25, 13-25)

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks got off to a slow start in the first set, going behind 6-1 in the blink of an eye. After a few kills by senior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.) and a service error from the Bears, the Hawks were right back in it in the middle of the set. Coast Guard would pull away, however, catching their stride and gaining a big lead. The Hawks tried to mount a comeback on the back of sophomore Gigi Churn (Lewisville, N.C.) as her service brought three straight points to the Hawks. This was not enough in the end as the Bears took the first 25-15.

  • The second set started in a back-and-forth battle between the two opponents until the Coast Guard took a formidable lead. The Hawks stormed back to bring it within one at 9-8, courtesy of good defense from sophomore Emily Theobald (Verona, N.J.) and junior Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.). From there, it was all Bears as they ran away with the second set by the score of 25-19.

  • It would be more of the same in the third set as the two battled back and forth until the Bears started gaining steam. Senior Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas) facilitated most of the offensive attack in the third set but was unable to push the Hawks over the edge as they dropped the third and were closed out in the minimum by the score of 25-13.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Connally eclipsed 1000 career assists, picking up 11 more, bringing her total for her career to 1001.

  • Junior Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) and Robinshaw led the way in the digs category, tallying five apiece.

  • The Hawks picked up three service aces with freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo.), sophomore Andrea Martir-Perez (Bristol, Conn.), and Churn each picking up one.
