Hawks Fall to Eastern Connecticut State University in Four Sets 3-1

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Hartford traveled to Willimantic to take on the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) in which the Warriors would come on top in four sets 3-1. 

 

Rapid Recap:

  • The first set began with back and forth action, as both teams traded blows, Hartford would gain some momentum with a 3-0 run by way of a kill from junior Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) and a pair of attack errors, giving the Hawks a 6-4 lead. The two teams would continue battling as ECSU would go on a 3-0, run and Hartford woulc counter with a 4-1 run with a kill coming from junior Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.), and a service ace from junior Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) as the Hawks would go up 15-13. ECSU would tie things up 16-16 and the teams would trade points once again, until Hartford would stall at 21 points as ECSU would take set one 25-21.

  • ECSU would take an early lead in the second set, going up 7-10, Hartford would respond in a big way, scoring four straight to give them a one point advantage 11-10, with two kills from freshman Grace O'Brien (Avon, Conn.) and Jo. Murphy. The Hawks would expand on this lead with another run this time going 8-2 with six of those coming unanswered, coming by way of another Legassey ace, and a handful of attack errors for the Warriors. The Hawks would build off this momentum, winning the set 25-20.

  • ECSU would start the third set hot, building a 9-2 lead early, Hartford would find their groove later on bringing the score to 16-10, with kills coming from freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo.), Jo. Murphy, and Legassey. However, the Warriors would keep their foot on the gas, taking set three 25-14.

  • The Hawks would be the first to attack in the fourth set taking a 3-0 lead as freshman Camille Earl (Houston, Texas.) would notch two service aces, however the Warriors would come right back with a 3-0 run of their own tying the game at three a piece. Both teams would continue to go back and forth tying things once again at 7-7. ECSU would begin to pull away at this point in the set going up 17-10. Hartford would cut into the lead with a 4-0 run with a kill from Jo. Murphy and another service ace for Legassey. The deficit would be too much to overcome, as ECSU would fall in the fourth set 25-17. 

 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Jo. Murphy and Johnson lead the Hawks in kills with nine each through the four sets, followed by Je. Murphy with five, and O'Brien with three. 

  • Freshman Mattea Cosby (Enfield, Conn.) lead Hartford in assists with 14, followed by senior Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas) with eight, and Legassey with three.

  • Je. Murphy finished with eight total blocks and one dig for Hartford, junior Nyanakuak Piok (East Syracuse, N.Y.) finished with four block assists, and Cosby with three block assists.

The Hawks return to the Chase Arena to take on Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday Sep. 30th, with first serve slated for 7:00PM.
