- The Hawks and Bison traded baskets over the first four minutes as the score was 7-7. Hartford would get the first sustained lead going on a 7-4 run highlighted by a corner three for junior Kaosi Chijioke (Suwanee, Ga.). The Hawks held control of the game going on a 6-0 spurt starred by a steal and finish for freshman Dayn Campbell (New York, N.Y.). After a sophomore Jaron Broomfield (Bronx, N.Y.) floater fell, Campbell would knock down his first collegiate three as the Hawks led 30-20 with 7:32 remaining in the first half. Nichols would slowly chip away going on a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 34. Freshman Ben Miller (Milford, Conn.) would connect on a deep three followed by another for senior Drew Stack (Madison, N.J.) as Hartford edged out a 41-38 lead into halftime.
- The teams traded points to start the second half with Hartford holding onto a 45-44 lead after two minutes. Junior Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would score a pair of buckets to keep the Hawks up 51-49. The Bison would take the lead 57-55, but Petion and Miller would kick start a 7-0 run to give Hartford a 62-57 advantage with 11:34 to play. Nichols would start to chip away eventually tying the game at 68-68 with 7:19 left. Broomfield would knock down a triple, followed by a bucket for Miller as the Hawks continued to jump in front as it was a one point game with six minutes to play. Nichols would answer with a flurry to lead 77-73 with just over five to play. Petion would knock down two free throws as the game stayed within one bucket. The Bison would push their lead to 83-77 with 3:33 to play. Chijioke nailed a three to cut the lead to just three, but Dominic Mello answered with a huge three of his own as the lead stayed at six. Nichols would knock down free throws to extend the lead to 93-86 with 54 seconds left. Chijioke would nail a and-one three followed by a Broomfield triple and a Stack three in between free throws to get the game down to 97-96. Nichols would hit free throws and would foul Ben Miller with 2.6 seconds to play. Miller missed the first and make the second. The Bison would make free throws to close out the game 101-97.
Inside The Numbers:
- Chijioke led Hawks putting together a double-double with 18 points (6-13 FG, 3-5 3PT, 3-3 FT) and 11 rebounds. Miller was the leading scorer for Hartford with 21 points (6-13 FG, 3-10 3PT, 6-8 FT). Petion registered 16 points (7-11 FG, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds and a block, while Campbell added a career-day scoring 13 points (4-7 FG, 1-3 3PT, 4-4 FT) to go with three assists, three boards and three steals.
- Mello led the Bison with 26 points (8-14 FG, 3-5 3PT, 7-7 FT) and four assists, while Javen Flowers-Smith added 24 points (9-16 FG, 1-4 3PT, 5-6 FT) and 10 assists in the win.
- The teams team stats were almost identical with Hartford holding a 42-38 points in the paint differential and a 25-22 bench point advantage.
