Hartford Field Hockey Fall to USJ 3-1 in Crosstown Matchup

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  - Hartford took on cross town rivals the St. Joseph Bluejays for their Breast Cancer Awareness Game where the Hawks would fall to the Bluejays 3-1.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Bluejays would get the first shots of the game with a pair inside of 3:30, one would go flying wide, the second would be stopped by Sophomore Carolyn Somers (Worcester Mass.) USJ would continue to be all over the Hawks and the work would pay off as they would finally break through the Hawks taking a 1-0 in the final minute on a shot from Grace Kociszewski.
  • The second quarter would be most of the same with the Bluejays dominating. They tallied nine shots in the 2nd Quarter with just one penalty corner to the Hawks zero in both categories. Despite the plethora of shots, USJ was unable to break through as Somers again would come up huge, saving eight of the nine attempts and keeping the Bluejays off the board and the score kept at 1-0.
  • The Bluejays would come out of the locker room with a vengeance, scoring in the first five minutes of the second half, Somers would initially make an amazing save but Kociszewski would follow it in for her second goal of the match. Somers would redeem herself by stopping the next two shot attempts from the Bluejays. Hartford would finally have a response, taking their first shot since the first quarter ten minutes into the third, they would then win their first penalty corner and take another shot but could not capitalize. The Hawks would get two more corners along with two more shots, but would fail to score.
  • The Hawks came out firing in the fourth, having a pair of shots to open the frame, Freshman Alexina Lentes (Agawam, Mass.) and Sophomore Kyra Benard (Agawam, Mass.) but again would fail to score. Kociszewski would jump a Hawk mistake with four minutes to play and find Alexa Maser who tapped her shot past Somers to put the game away for good. Despite the third goal for the Bluejays, Benard would tally her 10th goal of the season with thirty seconds to play to cap of the Hawks home finale as they would fall to the Bluejays 3-1.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Freshman Olive Thatcher (Keene, N.H.) and Lentes would lead the way in shots with 5 a piece, Lentes had all 5 on goal.
  • Benard scored her team leading tenth goal of the year.
  • Somers made 13 saves on 16 shots faced, her second highest save total of the season.
  • The Hawks were outshot 23-14, and 17-11 on shots on goal.
