BOSTON, Mass. - The Hartford men's basketball team dropped a Conference of New England (CNE) match up on Tuesday night falling to Suffolk University by a 70-68 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Rams jumped ahead 7-2, but a 10-0 run highlighted by six points for freshman Ben Miller (Milford, Conn.) gave the Hawks a 12-7 lead after eight minutes. Suffolk would answer back taking a 18-15 lead, but Miller continued his hot start as the teams were tied at 20-20 with six minutes left in the first half. The Rams would hold the lead once again extending it to 33-25, but Miller capped off a 20-point half knocking down his fifth triple to cut the deficit to 33-28 headed into the second half.
- Junior Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dominated the early going in the second half scoring four points to kick start a 7-0 Hawk run to give them a 35-33 lead. Suffolk would respond with a 7-0 run of their own to take back the five point lead with 15:05 left. Miller continued to be the top scorer for Hartford scoring five more points, while a three from sophomore Jaron Broomfield (Bronx, N.Y.) cut the Ram lead to just three points. Suffolk would answer again with eight-straight points, the Hawks would continue to keep the game within striking distance as we headed into the final 7:31. Hartford saw themselves down by 11 with under four minutes to play, but a 10-2 run over three minutes had the game within 66-63 with 48 seconds to play. After a defensive stop, Hartford would miss a three and the Rams would get the board to ice the game.
Inside The Numbers:
- Miller notched a new career-high with 28 points (9-16 FG, 5-7 3PT, 5-6 FT). Petion continues to shine in the Hartford lineup scoring 16 points (5-12 FG, 6-7 FT) to go with eight rebounds, four assists and a steal. Broomfield added 14 points (6-9 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-1 FT) and a pair of boards in the loss.
- Suffolk would use four double-digit scorers in the win with Nick Verdile (16), James Jones (14), Hatcher Nordquist (14), and Greg Keane (13) all contributing to the victory for the Rams.
- Hartford owned a 26-22 point advantage in the paint, while Suffolk held a 10-6 three-pointer advantage.
- The Hawks are on the outside looking in currently in the CNE playoff standings sitting in 7th place with a record of 6-6 with four games to play. The remaining games on the Hawks schedule include a pair of playoff teams most notably the University of New England who sits at 6-5 in the CNE and will play Hartford twice within 14 days starting on Saturday.
