Hartford Baseball Swept by Trinity College in Season Opener

HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford baseball team traveled across town to open their season in a doubleheader against the Trinity College Bantams on Saturday. The Hawks would fall in both games to the Bantams, falling 8-2 in game one and 12-0 in game two.

Rapid Recap Game 1 (L, 8-2):

  • The Bantams got off to a rapid start, a hit by a pitch, single, walk, passed ball and another hit by pitch would see the Bantams up two runs before the Hawks could get two outs. A ground out would add the third run of the frame making it 3-0 Trinity after the first.
  • The Hawks would get on the board in the third as junior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) ripped a double into the right field gap to score senior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.) for Hartford's first run of the season. The Bantams would respond in the bottom half with a solo shot from William Sawyer. The home team would follow it up with back-to-back doubles pushing the Trinity lead to 5-1. The Trinity bats would stay hot into the fourth starting it with a hit and walk chasing junior Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) from the game.
  • After back-to-back shut out innings from the Bantams, Timothy Domizio would have lift off in the 5th blasting a three-run home run to blow the game open making the score 8-1 Trinity.
  • Things went quiet through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. The Hawks would get shutout innings from junior Tyler Blumetti (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Michael Greco (Berkeley Heights, N.J.). Hartford would grab a late run in the top of the ninth from senior Cameron Boardman (Daegu, South Korea) hitting a sacrifice-fly. Trinity would hold on for the 8-2 win.

On the Mound:

  • Bubba got the start on the mound, going 3.1 innings, allowing five runs, with three walks and a pair of punch outs. Sophomore Jeffery Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) went two and two thirds innings letting up three runs. Blumetti and Greco each tossed a scoreless inning with Tyler getting two strikeouts and Greco getting a single punchie.

At the Plate:

  • Popovich went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, an RBI, and a walk. Boardman added the other ribby going 1-for-4 with a double and the sacrifice fly.

Rapid Recap Game 2 (L, 12-0):

  • The second game of the doubleheader started the same way as game one, with Trinity getting off to a hot start. The Bantams jumped all over sophomore Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.), starting the game with back-to-back home runs from Aidan Stern and Tyler Bernstein to make it 2-0 in an instant. The second and third innings were more of the same, as the Bantams scored four runs on three hits in the second to chase Gouin from the game. They then added another run with a steal of home in the third to jump out to a 7-0 lead after three.
  • The bats continued to stay hot for Trinity, a double, a walk, and a hit by pitch would load the bases and they would all come running home on a double by Cole Mascolo. Trinity would keep piling it on with back-to-back triples, making the score 12-0 after four. Things would go quiet after the loud fourth, with no more runs being scored thanks to a good pitching performance from senior Joe Dooley (West Hartford, Conn.), keeping the Bantams from scoring anymore. The Hawks would threaten in the seventh, loading the bases but would fail to score and be shutout as Trinity would win 12-0.

On the Mound:

  • Gouin had a rough outing going just two innings, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks. Sophomore Evan Gentile (Berlin, Conn) also had a rough day, throwing an inning and two-thirds, allowing six runs on three hits and walking three. Dooley had a solid day on the bump, striking out two over two innings of work and not allowing a run.

At the Plate:

  • Sophomore Nico DiGioa (Hamden, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Knight was on base twice with a single and a walk as the Hawks only had three hits and three walks in the loss.
