Hawks Baseball's Power Pitching Propels Them to Sweep Over Bowdoin College

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Hartford baseball team swept away the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College in their first games of the Russmatt Florida Invitational on Saturday.

Rapid Recap Game 1 (W, 2-0):

  • Junior Anthony Bubba (Jefferson,NJ) got the start in Game one and started his day with a scoreless first inning. Junior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) would get the Hawks on the board in the first inning, ripping a two-run single scoring senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) and graduate student Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.).
  • The Hawks would threaten again in the second with a runner on third but would fail to score. It was a scrappy third and fourth when both teams would threaten with runners in scoring position but both pitchers would finish the innings strong to keep the score the same.
  • In the seventh inning with the score still 2-0 Hawks, The Polar Bears would get the lead runner on with a single off of Bubba, to end the no-hit bid. Another single after a fly out would put the tying run on base with one out in the seventh. Bubba would then force two flyouts to shut the doors and get his first career complete game shutout.

On the Mound:

  • Anthony Bubba was the lone pitcher for the Hawks in the win, pitching a complete game shutout in the seven innings. His final line was zero runs allowed on two hits and three walks with four punchouts. Bubba only faced 28 batters in the win.

At the Plate:

  • It was a quiet day at the plate for the Hawks only having seven runners on base. Popovich drove in the only two runs for the Hawks and was on base twice. Ciccone went 1-for-3 and scored one of the Hawks two runs.

Post Game Press:
"It was a really good team win, the defense behind me was amazing and being able to come down into the warm weather and continue to stack wins felt good", said junior Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.). "The team played great and we will continue to try and carry that momentum for the rest of the games."

Rapid Recap Game 2 (W, 4-3):

  • Senior captain Joe Dooley (West Hartford, Conn.) got the start in Game two for Hartford. He had a rough first inning, allowing Bowdoin to get their first run of the day after a single would hit Dooley in the back and escape to the outfield to plate the run. The Hawks would respond in second through an RBI groundout from senior Ben Shultz (Berlin, Conn.) to knot the score at 1-1.
  • The Hawks bats would stay hot when senior Jermey Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) would beat out an infield single down the third base line to give the Hawks their first lead of the day. Mere moments later junior JJ Romatzick (Strafford, Conn.) would steal home on a pickoff attempt at first to make it 3-1 Hawks after three. In the fourth the Hawks added their fourth run and third on a groundout by senior Josh Kaplan (Suffren, N.J.).
  • After an hour-long rain delay, the Polar Bears would get right back in the game with a two run double from Liam Foley in the fourth. In the fifth inning senior captain Micheal Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) would enter for the Hawks, after a walk he would get the Hawks out of a bases loaded jam forcing a double play to keep the Hawks ahead. Featherstone would retire the next six Polar Bears he faced to clinch the win and the sweep in the first games of the spring break trip.

On the Mound:

  • Dooley was dealing three innings of one run ball prior to the rain delay, he allowed four hits, walked one, and punched out two. Junior Julian Rondon (West Nyack, N.Y.) finished with an inning tossed allowing a pair of runs on two hits with a strikeout. Featherstone picked up the three inning save, he struck out four of the nine batters he faced.

At the Plate:

  • The Hawks had six different players all with a hit. Mangiameli, Kaplan, and Shultz all picked up the RBIs in the victory.

Post Game Press:
"I think this first day for us was crucial in building momentum for the rest of the week", said senior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.). "After a long travel day yesterday it was great to get out on the field today and compete. Today was a collective team effort and I'm not able to pitch and close the game out without my teammates putting me in that position."

The Hawks will be back in action at 1:30 PM taking on William Paterson University at 1:30 PM.
