Hawks Baseball Falls to Wesleyan University 14-9

WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - The Hawks hosted the Cardinals of Wesleyan University in a home game that was originally scheduled to be on the road, however due to the conditions of Wesleyan's field, played at Fiondella field. Wesleyan would come out victorious 14-9 in nine innings of action. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks would take hold of the lead in the early goings, as senior John Russell (Shelton, Conn.) would hit a solo home run to give Hartford a 1-0 lead in the third inning. 

  • The Cardinals would retaliate with a bases loaded 2RBI single up the middle of the infield to take the lead 2-1 in the fourth inning. 

  • In the fifth inning the Cardinals would expand on their lead in a big way, as they would load the bases once again, and capitalize by posting four runs, giving them a 6-1 lead. Hartford would come back in the bottom of the inning with a long ball from senior Tyler Shannon (Madison, N.J.) would bring the Hawks score to two. 

  • In the sixth inning, Hartford would score again with an RBI base on balls from Russell, to bring the score within three runs for the Hawks. 

  • In the seventh inning, the Cardinals would run things up scoring two runs by way of a solo home run, and an RBI single into right field. In the bottom half of the inning, as junior Alyis Godbee (Hartford, Conn.)  would knock in a run via a SAC fly. Junior Peyton West (South Windsor, Conn.) would reach on an error from the shortstop and bring in another run making it 8-5.

  • In the eight, Wesleyan would add to their lead with another solo home run, and a bases loaded single that would score two making the score 11-5 in favor of the Cardinals.

  • In the top of the ninth inning Wesleyan would tack on three more runs by way of yet another solo home run, and a two RBI single to make it 14-5 with half an inning left. In the bottom of the inning, freshman Jayden Gathier (Meriden, Conn.) would knock a leadoff solo home run. A few at bats later Russell would walk in a run with the bases loaded, shrinking the lead to 14-7. Senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) would bring in a run by way of a SAC fly to straightaway center field. Senior J.J. Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) would come in to pinch hit, and secure what would be the Hawks' final run with a SAC fly to right field. Wesleyan would come out on top 14-9.

At the Plate:

  • Shannon would end the day 2-4 with the solo homer, as well as a single. Russell would finish the day going 2-3 with the solo homer and three RBI on the day. Graduate student Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.) would finish the game going 1-4 with a single. 

  • The Hawks' only extra base hits would come from the solo home runs from Russell, Shannon, and Gaither.

  • Hartford would leave 12 runners on base. 

  • The Hawks would work 11 walks.

On the Mound:

  • Freshman Logan Smalley (Chatham, N.Y.) would get the start for the Hawks going three innings, and giving up no runs on one hit with five strikeouts. Senior Logan Huzi (Trumbull, Conn.) would come in for relief and throw one inning giving up two runs on three hits, and no strikeouts. Sophomore Evan Gentile (Berlin, Conn.) would throw a third of an inning, giving up four runs on no hits in five batters faced. Junior Joseph Ferucci (Wolcott, Conn.) would throw for 14 pitches giving up one hit and two walks in three batters faced. Junior Julian Rondon (West Nyack, N.Y,) would come in and work 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in 11 at bats. Junior AJ Formato (Fairfield, Conn.) would come in and work one inning giving up three runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Junior Sean Stanley (Teaneck, N.J.) came into close things out for Hartford, going one inning and giving up three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in seven at bats.

  • The Hawks would combine for 18 strikeouts, and walk nine batters.

  • Hartford would give up a combined 14 hits.

The Hawks will host Endicott College on Saturday for a double header with first pitch slated for 12:00PM.
