WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford baseball team fell in a double header at home to the Endicott College dropping game one by a 5-0 final and 14-4 in game 2.
Rapid Recap Game 1 (L, 5-0):
- Junior Anthony Bubba (Jefferson, N.J.) got the start and worked around a lead-off double in the first to leave the first inning without allowing a run. The Hawks offense threatened after a lead off single from sophomore Nico DiGioia (Hamden, Conn.) and a walk by senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) but would fail to score.
- In the second Bubba struck out the first two Gulls hitters before hitting a batter and walking one but once again, Bubba prevailed with another punchout silencing Endicott yet again. The Hawks would threaten in the bottom of the second but once more would fail to score, this time with the bases loaded. Both offenses were silent from the second inning on and it would become a pitchers duel. Bubba would sit down 15 of the next 17 Gulls. The Hawks would threaten in the third and fourth with runners in scoring position in both innings with no one out, but the Gulls kept them off the scoreboard.
- In the eighth Endicott finally got to Bubba with a double and a homer to start the inning then after an error, Bubba would be pulled. The Gulls would keep on fighting, a hit by pitch and a walk issued by sophomore Michael Greco (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) and then two more runs would come in making it 4-0. The Gulls would add one more in the ninth and silence the Hawks bats again taking Game 1 5-0.
On the Mound:
-
Bubba went seven and two thirds and was credited the loss, he struck out nine and was issued two earned runs. Greco tossed just two-thirds allowed one earned run and struck out one. Sophomore Jeffery Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) finished the day for the Hawks only facing four batters but he struck one out and allowed no runs.
At the Plate:
- It was a quiet game for the Hawks at the plate, only managing six total base runners from six different players.
Rapid Recap Game 2 (L, 14-4):
- Unlike game 1, Endicott was able to start this game with a bang knocking senior Joe Dooley (West Hartford, Conn.) for 2 runs in the first frame. Just like the Endicott bats, the Hawks bats also woke up as they were able to tie the game at 2-2. Junior JJ Romatzick (Stafford, Conn.) would score Nico Digioa on an RBI single. Romatzick would come in to score on a sac-bunt from senior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.).
- The Hawks would have two costly errors in the top of the second which would lead to three more Endicott runs coming in to make it 5-2. Senior Josh Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y.) would get one back in the bottom half with a single up the middle to score senior Jeremey Magiameli (Middlefield, Conn.). In the third Endicott would stay hot scoring another run which would chase Dooley from the game. After the third, both offenses went silent outside of a sac-fly in the third from junior Tyler Shannon (Madison, N.J.) which cut the lead down to 6-4. Sophomore Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) kept the Gulls offense silent until the sixth where Endicott's Brenden Walsh would blow the game open with a two run bomb to make it 8-4. In the bottom half the Hawks would load the bases with nobody out, but after Shannon struck out and an extremely unfortunate double play the Hawks came up scoreless.
- The Gulls would ride the momentum they picked up in the sixth into the seventh and completely blow the game away. After a pair of walks, a hit batter, and a couple errors would be followed by a pair of two run doubles, the Gulls had hit Junior Julian Rondon (West Nyack, N.Y.) for four more runs chasing him from the game. Junior Sam Smith (Branford, N.J) cleaned up the mess but not before another Hawks error would lead to two more Endicott runs padding the lead to 14-4. The Hawks would go down easy in the bottom half of the seventh and fall due to mercy rule in seven innings 14-4.
