Hartford Baseball Secures Close Win Against Keene State College

KEENE, N.H. - The Hartford baseball team traveled to Keene State College on Wednesday afternoon, picking up their eighth-straight victory defeating the Owls by a 8-7 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Sophomore Jeffrey Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) managed a scoreless first inning highlighted by a senior Cameron Boardman (Daegu, South Korea) caught stealing. The Owls would jump ahead with a RBI double by Mitchell Coffey. The lead would expand in the third as the home team would get two more runs on just one hit. 
  • The Hawks offense took control during the top of the fourth, senior JJ Romatzick (Startford, Conn.) set the tone with a single to right center, followed by junior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) to do the same. Senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) sent a single to the pitcher allowing Romatzick to score, starting a ripple effect for Hartford. With senior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn) and senior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.) each providing RBIs to tie the game up. Senior John Russell (Eastchester, N.Y.) would get Hartford in front with a RBI double to score Knight and give the Hawks the lead. The Owls would get right back in front getting two more runs on just one hit. 
  • The Hawks would even the score again in the top of the sixth as Ciccone launched a homer to left field. Russell would follow with a three-run bomb to push Hartford in front 8-5. Keene State would rally for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on three hits, but junior Julian Rondon (West Nyack, N.Y.) would shut the door across the final three innings as the Hawks picked up the 8th win in a row. 
In the Circle:
  • Blake went three innings allowing two hits, five runs (all earned), and three strikeouts before stepping off the mound. Changing out for Blake in bottom of the fourth inning, sophomore Evan Gentile (Berlin, CT). Gentile challenging 11 Keene players for two innings, throwing a total of 34 pitches, five hits, two runs (both earned), and two strikeouts a season high. Rondon was crucial for Hartford in the win ending the close game with 48 total pitches to 12 players, allowing two walks, zero hits or runs, closing with five strikeouts.
At the Plate:
  • Russell had a powerful afternoon and was a game winning factor in the victory over Keene State going 2-for-4, with a home run, double and four RBI. Ciccone went 2-for-4 with a homer of his own to go with two runs scored and two ribbys. Popovich continues to be red hot from the plate going 3-for-5 with a run scored.

The Hawks will take on Nichols College on April 18th for Senior Day with the Conference of New England (CNE) doubleheader starting at 12:00 PM.
