Hartford Baseball Falls to Wentworth on Tuesday Afternoon

BOSTON, Mass. - The Hartford baseball team dropped their third Conference of New England (CNE) game of the year on Tuesday falling to Wentworth by a 6-4 final. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks would take an early lead in the top of the second as senior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) singled home senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) who singled and scored second and third. The Leopards would take the lead in the second on a two RBI single from Jake Samela. In the top of the fourth junior JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) tripled and later scored on a RBI single by Mangiameli. 
  • The game would slow down as the game would stay at 2-2 until the top of the seventh. Mangiameli would launch a homer to give the visitors the lead. Wentworth would respond again with two runs on three hits and a defensive error to take the lead once again at 4-3. Junior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) would immediately tie the game once again with a lead-off bomb in the top of the eighth. The Leopards would take control in the bottom of the sixth getting two more runs on two hits to lead 6-4. Hartford would not give a response falling by the 6-4 final. 

On the Mound:

  • Sophomore Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) got the start going six innings allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. Freshman Logan Smalley (Chatham, N.Y.) picked up his first loss of the season getting four outs allowing two runs on three hits. Sophomore Michael Greco (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) would get the final two outs with a punch out. 

At the Plate:

  • Mangiameli went 3-for-4 with a homer with three RBI and a run scored. Popovich went 1-for-4 with a homer. Romatzick added a 2-for-4 day with a run scored and a triple. 
Playoff Picture:
The Hawks currently sit as the #2 seed in the CNE with a 10-3 record. They trail Endicott College (12-1) and are ahead of Wentworth (7-6) and Western New England (7-6). 
 
Up Next:
The Hawks will head to Dunkin Park on Friday taking on West Conn with a 10:15 AM start.
