SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Hartford baseball team could not clinch the #2 seed in the Conference of New England (CNE) playoffs on Tuesday falling to the current #3 seed Western New England University by a 12-6 final on the road.
Rapid Recap:
- The Golden Bears would jump ahead by three in the bottom of the first after getting a pair of hits and a defensive error. The lead would stay at 3-0 until the top of the fourth where Hartford would get three runs on four hits to even the score. It started with senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) who singled home the first run for the visitors. Senior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) launched a homer to even the score at 3-3.
- Western New England would get right back in front in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double and RBI single as Hartford once again trailed. The Hawks would jump back in front in the top of the fifth. It started with a RBI single by senior Cameron Boardman (Daegu, South Korea). Ciccone followed it up with a two ribby single up the middle to give the visitors the lead 6-5. The Golden Bears battled once again evening the score on a double and RBI single to knot the game at 6-6.
- In the bottom of the sixth the Golden Bears blew the game wide open getting four runs on two hits and a defensive error taking a 10-6 lead. Western New England would get two more runs in the bottom of the eighth as the ran away to a 12-6 win.
On the Mound:
- Sophomore Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) got the start going 3.2 innings allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and a lone strikeouts. Freshman Logan Smalley (Chatham, N.Y.) picked up the loss allowing four runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings. Junior Julian Rondon (West Nyack, N.Y.) went the next two innings allowing one run with two punch outs. Sophomore Michael Greco (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) would get the final three outs allowing two runs.
At the Plate:
- Mangiameli went 3-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and a run scored. Senior JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.), Boardman, Ciccone and senior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) all added two hit days in the loss.
Playoff Picture:
The Hawks currently sit as the #2 seed in the CNE with a 12-4 record. They trail Endicott College (15-1) and lead Western New England (10-6) with two games to play.
