Hartford Baseball Sweeps Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - Hartford Baseball took down the Roger Williams University Hawks in a double header sweep in a Conference of New England (CNE) battle. 

Rapid Recap Game 1 (W, 9-6):

  • In the first inning the Hawks of Hartford would be shut down in order to start the afternoon. Roger Williams would threaten with the bases loaded in the bottom half but Junior Anthony Bubba (Jefferson. N.J.) Would strike out back to back batters to get of a jam. Hartford would go down in order in the second and the third innings. After Bubba pitched out of a jam in the second, Roger William would finally get to him, getting two runs on a single and a double. 
  • In the fourth the Hawks would get their first base runner on a wall, but would not score. Bubba kept Roger Williams off the scoreboard in the bottom half. In the fifth Junior Zaynn Godbee (Hartford, Conn) would blast a two-run-homer to knot the score up at 2-2. Bubba had an another good inning keeper Roger Williams scoreless. 
  • In the sixth the Hawks offense would explode. Sophomore Nico DiGoia (Hamden, Conn.) would tee off to put the Hawks in front with a solo shot. Junior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.) would rip a double to score another run. A few batters after, Godbee was hit by a pitch to get a RBI the easy way and make it 5-2 Hartford. After another dominant Bubba inning, Hartford would plate three more runs in the seventh. Popovich drove in one with a double, Popovich would come home on a double from Senior Ryan Knight (Peabody, Mass.), Senior Cameron Boardman (Daegu, South Korea)  would drive in the the third of the inning on a sac-fly making it 8-2 Hawks. 
  • Roger Williams would chase Bubba in the bottom of the seventh making way for Junior Sam Smith (Branford, Conn.) who would let up four runs as Roger would cut the lead down to 8-6. Senior Micheal Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) would relieve Smith and close out the inning to limit the damage. Popovich would double in the top of the eighth to bring in the ninth Hawk run and drive in his third run of the day. Featherston would finish the rest of the game and pick up the seven out save as the Hawks prevailed 9-6. 

On the Mound:

  • Bubba picked up the win he allowed 2 earned runs, only walked three and struck out 11 in his six innings. Smith allowed two runs in his two-thirds on an inning. Featherstone was credited a seven out save with three strikeouts. 

At the Plate:

  • Popovich drove in three and had three hits. Digioa went deep and drove in two. Godbee also went deep and drove in three runs. Senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) was on base four times. 

Rapid Recap Game 2 (W, 13-2 F/7):

  • Senior Joe Dooley (West Hartford, Conn.) got the start in game 2 for the Hawks he would work around a single and prevent Roger Williams from scoring. Just like game 1, the Hawks offense would remain silent early on, going down in order in both the first and second. In the bottom of the second Roger would take the lead on a fielder's choice.
  • The Hawks would storm right back in the top of the third. Digoia drove in a run on an RBI single. Junior JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) hit a sac-fly to put Hartford in front. The sac-fly would be followed with three straight doubles by Alek Popovich, Senior John Russell (Eastchester, N.Y.), and Senior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn) after all the damage was done the Hawks lead 5-1.
  • After a quiet fourth, the Hawks got right back to it in the fifth, another Popovich double made it 6-1. That would be followed by a hit by pitch and a walk, which inevitably led to Senior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) blasting a grand slam to blow the game wide open and make the score 10-1 Hawks. 
  • After five innings, Dooley would be pulled. Junior Julian Rondon (Nyack, N.Y.) would enter, he was immediately in trouble after a single, a walk, and a passed ball led to Roger grabbing a run back making it 10-2. When the Hawks offense came up to hit in the seventh, they exploded once again. Cameron Boardman went deep hitting a two run shot then two batters later Junior Tyler Shannon (Madison, N.J.) would dive in the 13th and final Hawk run thanks to Rondon closing the door in the bottom off the seventh clinching the mercy rule win and a sweep on the road for the Hawks.

On the Mound:

  • Dooley was credited the win after tossing five innings of one run ball with just four hits allowed and zero walks issued. Rondon finished off game 2 he allowed two hits, two runs, but walked four and struck out six Roger hitters. 

At the Plate:

  • The bats were clicking from everyone as Romatzick, Popovich, Ciccone, and Magiameli all had multiple hits and at least one RBI. Digoia, Russell, and Shannon all pitched in as well with a hit and RBI a piece.

Hartford Baseball will travel to Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken N.J. for a non conference tilt on Monday at 7 P.M.
