Blake's Strong Start Leads Hartford Baseball Over Stevens 7-4

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Hartford baseball team improved to 10-9-1 on the 2026 season defeating Stevens by a 7-4 final.

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks quickly jumped ahead as sophomore Nico DiGioia (Hamden, Conn.) walked, followed by a homer to right-center from junior JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.). Sophomore Jeffrey Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) got the ball for Hartford, setting down the first six Ducks he saw and kept the Hawk lead at 2-0 headed into the fourth inning.
  • Junior Zaynn Godbee (Hartford, Conn.) would launch a homer of his own in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0. Blake continued to dazzle setting down another six Ducks in a row in the middle innings. Hartford would add a fourth run in the top of the sixth as senior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) picked up a two-out RBI single.
  • Blake would depart after six innings, which Stevens took advantage of scoring three runs on five hits to cut the lead to 4-3. Hartford would respond in the eighth starting with homer by junior Alek Popovich (Dudley, Mass.). Mangiameli would generate another run as a sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown into the outfield to score the sixth run. Hartford would get one more run as Alyis Godbee (Hartford, Conn.) would get a productive ground out bringing home the seventh run of the day for Hartford.
  • Stevens would try and complete a comeback getting a run in the ninth and stranding two runners on base, but Hartford would close the door to pick up win number 10 on the season.

On the Mound:

  • Blake picked up his first collegiate win in a gem of a start for the Hawks. The sophomore threw six innings of shutout ball with eight strikeouts and just five base runners allowed. Sophomore Evan Gentile (Berlin, Conn.) struggled out of the bullpen only getting one out while allowing three runs. Freshman Logan Smalley (Chatham, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate save tossing 2.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with four punch outs in the win.

At the Plate:

  • Hartford would hit three home runs in the win as the offense continues to hit its stride. Popovich went 2-for-4 with one of the solo homers. Mangiameli went 1-for-2 with a RBI, while senior Patrick Joseph (Pomona, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a triple.
Post Game Press:
"The runs were a huge part of my outing", said sophomore Jeffrey Blake (Hopewell, N.J.). "It helped me to settle in early and the guys made the plays behind me all game. When the bats are hot it makes it easy for me to find a grove and attack hitters."
