Hartford Field Hockey Battles in 3-1 Loss to University of Southern Maine

GORHAM, MAINE - The Hartford field hockey team had its first road game of the year on Saturday falling to the University of Southern Maine by a 3-1 final. Freshman Leah Miller (Guilderland, N.Y.) would make some Hartford history making 21 saves a program-record in the loss. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Huskies would be on the attack early but Miller would make six saves in the first quarter to keep the game scoreless. Freshman Shannon Quaile (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) and sophomore Ashley Taylor (South Deerfield, Mass.) both had a chance for the Hawks, but Haylee Romasco would make the saves for the Huskies as after 15 minutes it was 0-0.
  • The Huskies would get another chance in the 16th and 19th minute, but Miller once again stayed strong and made the saves. Hartford would get on the board first as after a shot saved by Romasco sophomore Eva Nasse (Wethersfield, Conn.) tapped in the rebound for the 1-0 lead. Southern Maine would get one more attempt before half but Miller again stepped up and made the save. 
  • USM would dominate the play in starting in the second half as Hartford would not get a single shot on target in the third quarter. Miller would make seven saves over the first 14 minutes of the quarter, but Maddie Niles would tie the game up scoring a goal from Mackenzie Hall at the 44:33 mark to even the score for the Huskies. 
  • The Huskies would jump ahead in the 47th minute as Julia Elie would score on a penalty corner after a pass from Niles found Elie for the lead. Miller would make four more saves, but in the 57th minute the Huskies would add a third goal as Allie Flagg finished home a rebound. Southern Maine would go on to win 3-1. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Nasse would score the first goal of 2026 and the first of her collegiate career in the loss. 
  • Miller set the program-record in her debut making 21 saves in the 60 minutes. 
  • Niles led the Huskies with a goal and an assist in the win as USM moved to 1-1 on the year. Romasco made three saves in the win. 
  • Southern Maine had a 39-4 shots advantage including a 24-4 on target differential. USM would also have 12 penalty corners in the game while Hartford failed to have one.

The Hawks will travel to Chicopee, Mass. on Tuesday with a 7:00 PM game against Elms College.
