WEST HARTFORD, CT - The University of Hartford men's basketball team dropped a 72-47 decision to Boston University on Saturday afternoon at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
Hartford (6-17 overall, 2-7 America East) fell behind from the tip and shot only 19 percent in the first half to trail 34-19 at the break. Boston University (11-9 overall, 6-2 America East), which won its fifth straight game, never trailed and led by as many as 21 in the first half and 26 in the second half.
Boston University's John Holland and Hartford's Morgan Sabia were named Nestle PurinaONE America East Players of the Game. Holland led all scorers with 21 points and added seven rebounds and two assists. Sabia was the only Hawk in double figures with 12 points and finished with five rebounds and two blocks.
The Hawks missed their first eight shots of the game but trailed only 5-2 when senior Jaret von Rosenberg scored the team's first points on a layup 4:24 into the contest. BU opened the game up with a 17-3 run over a seven-minute stretch. Holland netted three treys during the run while Corey Lowe added a pair of layups. A basket by Matt Wolff capped the run and gave the Terriers a 24-7 lead with 7:39 to play in the half.
Hartford's shooting woes continued for the rest of the half. The Hawks made only four of their first 28 field goal attempts and trailed by 15 at the break only because von Rosenberg scored five points over the final 49 seconds. Hartford shot 6-of-31 from the floor and 2-of-14 from three-point range in the stanza. Boston University, paced by 15 points from Holland, shot 43 percent in the half.
The Hawks were never able to cut the deficit to single digits in the second half. The Terriers let the lead slip down to 13 on three occasions but answered with scores on the ensuing possessions each time.
Boston University shot 51 percent for the game. The Terriers got 16 points from Jake O'Brien and 13 from Scott Brittain, who also added six rebounds and five blocks. Lowe finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Hartford shot 27 percent in the contest and 21 percent from long range. Senior Michael Turner pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and added six points. Freshman Clayton Brothers also had a strong game with nine points off the bench.
Hartford will look to rebound against New Hampshire on Wednesday, February 4 at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
