WEST HARTFORD, CT - The University of Hartford men's basketball team dropped a 62-44 decision to Binghamton University on Wednesday night at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
Hartford (6-22 overall, 2-12 America East) shot 38 percent in the contest-including 2-of-19 from three-point range-and turned the ball over 15 times. Binghamton (18-8 overall, 11-3 America East) moved into a tie with Vermont for first place in the conference. The Bearcats, who shot 41 percent and made 18-of-22 from the free throw line, outscored the Hawks 17-4 on points off turnovers.
Senior Michael Turner led Hartford with 13 points and added four rebounds and four steals. Tiki Mayben led three Bearcats in double figures with 15 points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Both Turner and Mayben were named Nestle PurinaONE America East Players of the Game.
Binghamton never trailed in the game and opened up double-digit lead for the first time with 1:47 to play in the first half. Hartford trimmed the deficit to 36-28 before the halftime buzzer on lay-ups by senior Jaret von Rosenberg and sophomore Andres Torres in the final 49 seconds. Turner and Mayben paced their respective squads with 11 points apiece in the stanza.
The Bearcats came out in the second half and promptly pumped the lead to double digits once again. Hartford twice cut the deficit to six points-the final time coming with 8:19 to go-but couldn't get any closer. The Hawks scored only two points over the final 8:19 of the contest, both from the free throw line. Binghamton outscored Hartford 14-2 during the stretch to seal the win.
Binghamton's D.J. Rivera scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to record a double-double. He also dished out five assists and had two steals. Reggie Fuller finished with 10 points for the Bearcats.
Freshman Genesis Maciel scored nine points and added four rebounds and two assists for the Hawks. Torres led Hartford with three assists.
Hartford will next play at Marist College on Saturday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. The game is a part of the ESPNU BracketBusters series.
