POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The University of Hartford men's basketball team dropped a 57-35 decision at Marist College on Saturday night at the McCann Center.
The game was a part of the 2009 ESPNU BracketBusters series. Hartford (6-23 overall) shot just 23 percent for the game and went 6-of-29 from beyond the arc. Marist (9-20 overall) shot 40 percent and forced the Hawks into a season-high 24 turnovers.
Trailing by six early in the game, Hartford took the lead behind 11 straight points that included three-pointers by sophomore Morgan Sabia, freshman Genesis Maciel and sophomore Andres Torres. The Hawks then went up 16-11 on another trey by Sabia with 10:05 remaining in the first half.
The field goal would be Hartford's last of the half. The Hawks were outscored 14-1 over the final 10 minutes of the stanza and missed eight shots while committing seven turnovers. Marist, behind 11 first half points from Dejuan Goodwin, led 25-17 at the break.
Marist took a double-digit lead with its first basket of the second half and never let its lead dip below 10 again. Hartford netted its first field goal of the second half just over four minutes in on a lay-up by senior Jaret von Rosenberg.
The Red Foxes shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half to keep the Hawks from threatening. Goodwin added nine points over the final 20 minutes to finish with a game-high 20, one of two Marist players in double figures. Von Rosenberg and Sabia each scored eight points to lead Hartford.
Hartford will play its final home game of the season on Thursday, February 26 against Stony Brook University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and three seniors will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony.
