WEST HARTFORD, CT - The University of Hartford men's basketball team dropped a 62-40 decision to Stony Brook University in its final home game of the season on Thursday night at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
Hartford (6-24 overall, 2-13 America East) got off to a slow start and never recovered. Stony Brook (16-12 overall, 8-7 America East) never trailed and dominated the boards by a 41-28 margin. Muhammad El-Amin led all scorers with 21 points for the Seawolves while senior Jaret von Rosenberg paced the Hawks with 14 points. The two were named Nestle PurinaONE America East Players of the Game.
The Hawks started the game by going 1-of-7 from the floor and turned the ball over six times over the first 7:30 of the contest. Stony Brook took full advantage, rushing out to a 15-3 lead behind the play of El-Amin and Brian Dougher. El-Amin scored five points during the stretch while Dougher netted eight, including back-to-back three-pointers to start the game.
Hartford finally got its offense on track and cut the deficit to single digits. The Hawks twice pulled to within four in the final minute, but each time the Seawolves answered with a three-pointer. The final trey came with three seconds remaining in the half to give Stony Brook a 30-23 advantage at the break.
The Hawks pulled within six points in the opening minute of the second half on a three-pointer by sophomore Morgan Sabia, but that would be as close as they would get. The Seawolves responded with nine straight points to pump the lead back to double digits and never looked back.
Demetrius Young added 15 points for Stony Brook while Dougher finished with 12. The Seawolves shot 44 percent for the game and outscored the Hawks 28-14 in the paint.
Sabia finished with eight points for the Hawks while senior Michael Turner tied a career high with 11 rebounds. Hartford shot 29 percent for the game and went 5-of-27 from three-point range.
Hartford will wrap up the regular season at Boston University on Sunday, March 1 at Agganis Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
