Box Score

Vestal, NY – Junior guard Mary Silvia scored 16 second half points, including four three pointers, helping lift the Hawks to a 70-65 road victory at Binghamton University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in America East action, while Binghamton drops to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Silvia, who scored a combined nine points in the last six games, finished the game shooting 6-of-11 from the field, including 50-percent from beyond the arc (4-of-8) to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Silvia was named the America East Player of the game for Hartford, who shot 41.1 percent for the game (23-of-56) from the field.

Hartford finished with nine three pointers for the second time this season, led by Smith's four which were the first for Silvia since December 13 against New Hampshire. On the other side, the Bearcats finished with 12 three pointers, the second most for Binghamton this season.

Joining Silvia in double figures was Diana Delva with 11 points and Daphne Elliott and Jackie Smith who each finished with 10 points.  Andrea Holmes led the Bearcats and all players in the game with 22 points.

It was a back and forth game from the tip with a total of 13 lead changes and five ties. After five lead changes in the opening seven minutes, Hartford used a 6-0 run to open up a 12-9 lead with 12:53 to play in the first half. The Hawks didn't relinquish lead until the final minutes of the half when the Bearcats knocked down back-to-back three pointers from Erica Carter and Holmes to pull ahead 32-30 with 1:26 to play before the break.

Neither team would score in the final minute of the first half with Binghamton taking the slim advantage into the locker room. Carter led all players in the first half with 13 points, while Erica Beverly led the Hawks with eight points.

The Hawks scored the first two baskets of the half, both in the paint, to retake the lead before a 7-0 run for the Bearcats allowed them to take a 41-36 advantage with 11:49 to play in the game. The run was capped off by a Jackie Ward three pointer.

The Hawks then used its second run of the game, this time 8-0, to retake the lead at 44-41. The run began with back-to-back three pointers from Elliott and Silvia. After a pair of free throws for Binghamton, Hartford opened up the lead to five, making the run 12-2. Silvia capped off the run with a steal and a layup, the steal coming as Holmes passed the ball directly to Silvia as time was running out on the shot clock.

Binghamton wouldn't go away easily, knocking down three-straight three pointers for a 9-0 run, which gave the Bearcats a 52-48 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the game. Hartford answered with another run, this time 8-0, which saw back-to-back three pointers giving the Hawks a 56-52 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish.

A put-back layup from Darryll Peterson with 2:54 pulled the Bearcats within two, the closest they would get for the remainder of the game. Silvia answered that layup with her fourth three pointer of the game from the wing, which gave Hartford a 59-54 advantage with 2:27 to play. The Hawks defense responded by holding the Bearcats without a basket until there was 41 seconds to play in the game.

In the scoreless span for the Bearcats, the Hawks used three free throws to go ahead 62-54, the largest lead for either team in the game. It would come down to the Hawks free throw shooting for the remainder of the game as Hartford hit 8-of-10 from the line in the final 40 seconds, which proved to be enough to hold off a late barrage of three pointers, three in the final 41 seconds, for the victory.

Hartford will return home for the first time since the conference opener on January 2 to take on the Maine Black Bears on Monday, January 18, at 7:00 p.m.
