BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - One final road game faces the Hartford men's basketball team as they prepare for the 2010 America East Championship. The Hawks, who wrap up their regular season at home on Sunday, will play their final road game of the season on Wednesday evening when they visit Binghamton at the Binghamton University Events Center at 7 p.m.
Although the Hawks will be playing the America East Championship in the friendly confines of Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion, Wednesday's game has major implications for seeding at the event. Hartford currently sits at 5-9 in the America East, tied with New Hampshire. Having beaten the Wildcats twice, the Hawks hold a tiebreaker over New Hampshire, though, and would hold the sixth seed if the tournament began today.
Binghamton is currently 7-7 in the America East, the fifth place squad. Hartford knocked off Binghamton, 64-63, in the teams' first meeting last month, so the Hawks could earn a tiebreaker over the Bearcats as well with a win tonight. Hartford wraps up its season at home against eighth-place Albany, while Binghamton will visit second-place Vermont.
In that first meeting of the season on January 21, Hartford closed the game out on a 13-2 run, capped by a Joe Zeglinski three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to claim a 64-63 victory. Zeglinski led the team with 16 points against the Bearcats. Joel Barkers and Milton Burton added 13 points each, while Morgan Sabia scored 12 and pulled down eight rebounds.
Hartford comes into Wednesday's game looking to snap a four-game losing streak. The Hawks last won at New Hampshire on February 6, 57-54.
Wednesday's game can be heard on the flagship station of Hartford men's basketball, WDRC-1360. Jeff Dooley and Randy LaVigne will have the call.
