West Hartford, CT – Holding the New Hampshire Wildcats to just eight points in the first 15:13 of the second half led the University of Hartford women's basketball team to a 65-35 victory at Chase Arena on Saturday.
With the victory the Hawks extend their unbeaten streak to 13 games and remain undefeated in conference play 10-0. The win also pushes the Hawks over the 20-win mark for the sixth-straight season, currently 20-3 overall.
Hartford was led by its senior forward/center Diana Delva, the Nestle Purina ONE America East Player of the Game, who finished with her team leading seventh double double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. The nation's second best shooter finished the game 6-of-8 from the field and 2-of-4 at the free throw line. Delva's increases her conference leading field goal percentage to 67.0 percent (132-of-197).
Joining Delva as the only other player in double figures was Mary Silvia who finished with 14 points for her sixth game in double figures this season. Silvia finished the game shooting 6-of-10 from the field including a three pointer, with 10 of her points coming in the second half.
As a team, the Hawks finished the game shooting 43.3 percent from the field (26-of-60), including a second half performance of 53.3 percent (16-of-30), the third-straight game the Hawks have put up a 50 percent or better shooting half. Hartford also won the battle of the boards with a 47-36 advantage, led by Delva's 15 rebounds. Senior Jenna Peterson finished second with seven. Peterson also finished the game a perfect 3-of-3 from the field, with two three pointers, for eight points.
Hartford opened the game up to an early 9-2 lead after allowing the Wildcats to strike first on a Candace Williams jump shot. Williams was named the Wildcats America East Player of the game, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight boards.
Hartford's early 9-0 run saw four points come from Delva, while Peterson hit her first three pointer of the game during the stretch. The Wildcats answered back, tying the game at 12 with 11:38 to play in the first half. The tie came on back-to-back baskets from Chriss Hall, a three pointer, and Jill McDonald.
After both teams went scoreless for the next three minutes, the Hawks began to pull away, to as much as a nine-point advantage, its largest of the half, with 2:20 to play. The lead came on a layup from Delva. The Wildcats struck first in the game and would strike last in the half, a three pointer from Cari Reed with 1:13 to play, making the Hawks lead 25-19, which it would remain at the break.
Hartford came out of the break and increased the intensity of the game, not allowing the wildcats more than two points for the first eight minutes. Both of those first two points, and the first four total of the half, came on free throws. The Wildcats first bucket in the second half came with 8:36 to play in the game and was a layup from Williams. The Hawks defense forced the first 17 shots off the mark before Williams broke the drought.
The Hawks run in that span allowed for a 29 point advantage, that lead coming courtesy of a Delva layup. Right after the Williams bucket, the Hawks broke their lead into a 30 point margin with a three pointer from Silvia with 8:17 to play.
The Hawks largest lead of the game was 33, which came on three different occasions. The first came by way of a free throw from Silvia, completing a three-point play. Layups from Nikkia Smith and Ilicia Mathis provided the next two largest leads, the last coming with 3:30 to play.
Hartford will take its final overnight trip of the season on Tuesday when they travel the farthest north in the America East Conference to Orono, ME for a meeting with the Black Bears. Hartford and Maine are scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
