WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford men's basketball team concluded its season on Saturday when it fell to Boston University in the quarterfinal of the 2010 America East Championship Presented by Newman's Own, 87-46. Joe Zeglinski led the Hawks with 11 points.
"Not many teams would have beaten Boston U. today," head coach Dan Leibovitz said. Indeed, the Terriers tied a conference tournament record with 14 three-pointers. Corey Lowe knocked down 7-of-9 from downtown, finishing with 26 total points, five rebounds and four assists.
The loss marked the first time since Leibovitz became the head coach of the Hawks that the team failed to win at least one game in the tournament. Hartford defeated Boston University, 59-52, en route to its lone championship game appearance, in 2008. That remains the most recent Hartford victory over the Terriers, who won all three contests between the two squads this season.
The game started off well for Hartford. The strains from the pep band's version of the Hartford rallying cry, Brass Bonanza, still echoed through the gym as junior Morgan Sabia opened the game for Hartford with two three-pointers, giving the Hawks a very early 6-5 edge. From there, the Terrier blitz was on. Boston University hit 9-of-17 from downtown in the first half to lead 48-20. They did not cool down in the second 20 minutes of play, finishing 14-of-26 (53.8%).
The game was well in hand at halftime, but Hartford came out fighting in the second. The Hawks managed to hold the sizzling Terriers scoreless for the first three-and-a-half minutes of the period, but could not solve a stifling Terrier defense, never cutting the deficit under 20 points.
Sabia finished with seven points and a team-best seven rebounds. Milton Burton, who scored five and added five rebounds, dished out a team-high four assists.
Hartford concludes its season 8-22, finishing 6-10 in the America East. Senior Zack Zeglinski scored two points in his final appearance with brother Joe, while senior David Bookman pulled down a rebound in four minutes.
Boston University advances to the semifinals on Sunday, facing top-seeded Stony Brook. The Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion will host the game, and tickets are still available.
