WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Following a monster week which saw him set career highs for points, rebounds and assists in a single game and follow that up by leading the Hawks to their first 2-0 start in the America East since 2007-08, senior
Morgan Sabia was named the America East's co-Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. Sabia, who shares the weekly honor with Maine's Troy Barnies, averaged 18.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for the week as Hartford defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), Maine and Albany.
The honor is the first conference recognition for a Hartford player this season, and the first America East Player of the Week award of Sabia's career.
The San Anselmo, California native's hot stretch actually goes back four games. Last Saturday at St. Mary's, Sabia poured in what was then a career high with 26 points in a game less than an hour's drive from his hometown.
Upon returning home, Sabia looked unstoppable in the Hawks' final non-conference tune-up, an 82-74 defeat of St. Francis (N.Y.). By halftime, Sabia had already pulled down 11 rebounds, two off his career high. He would add six more in the second half to bring his total to 17. Sabia was also a clutch 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the closely-contested game, shooting 8-of-15 from the field to finish with 27 points. Sabia also found his teammates for four assists, a new personal best.
Sabia did not let up on Wednesday in the Hawks' first conference game. Dropping 19 points at Maine, Sabia helped the Hawks overcome a slow start and grab a 61-59 road victory in their conference opener. He added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals while hitting a perfect 3-of-3 three-point shots.
On Sunday, Sabia wrapped up his week with a strong eight-point, seven-rebound performance in the Hawks' dominating 62-42 victory over Albany. He added two of the Hawks' five blocks, helping a defense which forced 17 turnovers while giving up only six.
Sabia and the Hawks will be back on the court on Tuesday evening at New Hampshire. Hartford swept two meetings with the Wildcats last season, and has won five of its last eight games against UNH. New Hampshire, which lost star guard Alvin Abreu earlier this season to an ACL tear, is 6-9 overall and 0-3 in the America East. The Wildcats are led by Tyrone Conley's 12.9 points per game, although they have the worst scoring offense in the America East (58.5 points per game), as well as the worst scoring defense (61.7 points per game). New Hampshire is pulling down 36.8 rebounds a game, second best in the league.
Tip off between the Hawks and Wildcats is set for 7:00 p.m. from Lundholm Gym. All the action will be on the flagship station of Hartford men's basketball, WDRC-1360 AM. Jeff Dooley and Randy LaVigne will have the call.
