BOX SCORE
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Morgan Sabia had a double double with 17 points and a career high-tying 17 rebounds on Thursday night, but it was not enough as the Hartford men's basketball team fell to UMBC in double overtime, 74-70. Hartford (6-12, 3-2) lost for the first time at home during conference play this season.
The Hawks shot 10-of-38 from beyond the arc. UMBC (3-16, 2-4), meanwhile, shot 12-for-24.
After a slow offensive start, the Hawks took a 26-25 lead when junior
Clayton Brothers found senior
Milton Burton for an alley-oop dunk that brought the crowd of 1,129 to its feet. Hartford put on another show-stopping moment as the half ended, when senior
Joe Zeglinski buried a 40-foot three-pointer to beat the buzzer and give Hartford a 34-30 lead.
Zeglinski finished with a team-high 19 points.
Hartford held that lead until 3:58 remained in the game when a three-pointer by UMBC's Travis King tied the score at 57. After one Zeglinski free throw gave Hartford a one-point lead, Justin Fry knocked down two freebies to give UMBC a 59-58 lead with 2:49 to play. Zeglinski hit another free throw with 1:27 to play that tied the score, and neither team was able to score as regulation closed with the score knotted.
The Hawks took a quick lead in overtime when
Anthony Minor sunk two free throws 12 seconds into the extra period. Minor finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals, while shooting 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.
Neller followed with a tying jumper, and then sunk a three to give the Retrievers a 64-61 lead with 1:44 to play. The Hawks had a quick answer, however, as junior
Genesis Maciel nailed a three from the right wing to tie the score. The Hawks and Retrievers each got another bucket before Sabia's long three-point attempt rimmed out at the buzzer, leaving the teams tied at 66 at the end of the first overtime.
In the second overtime, Hartford again drew first blood when Sabia worked his way into the paint for a lay-up. With under two minutes to play, Neller worked free for a lay-up to tie the score, and King's three gave UMBC a 71-68 lead with 52 seconds to play.
With less than 30 seconds to play, the Retrievers took the ball out of bounds with a chance to put the game away. However, Zeglinski stepped in and swiped the inbounds pass, then found
Milton Burton under the rim to cut the lead to 71-70. After a quick foul, Chris de la Rosa hit one of two free throws to extend UMBC's lead to 72-70.
Hartford had the ball with 20 seconds to play and a chance to tie or take the lead, but the Hawks coughed the ball up, and Fry sunk two free throws to put the game away.
The Hawks will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host the Boston University Terriers at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased by calling 860-768-HAWK or by visiting the Malcolm and Brenda Berman Athletics Box Office at the Reich Family Pavilion.
