BOX SCORE
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Things never got going for the Hartford men's basketball team on Saturday as they set season lows for points and three-pointers in a 69-35 loss at Stony Brook. The game wraps up Hartford's first tour of the America East this season with the Hawks sitting at .500, 4-4 in the league.
Milton Burton led the team with 10 points, scoring eight in the first half as Hartford fell to the Seawolves for a fifth straight time.
Hartford's 35 points marked the lowest number the team has scored since a 57-35 loss at Marist on February 21, 2008. Meanwhile, the Hawks also set a season low with just two three-pointers, both from Burton. As a team, Hartford was 2-for-22 from downtown, a season-low 9.1 percent.
The Hawks fell behind early, as Stony Brook was sharp from long range and hit three of their first four three-point attempts to build a 9-2 lead. The Hawks cut the deficit to four at 13-9 with 12:35 to play when
Anthony Minor drove to the hoop and scooped in a lay-up. Stony Brook responded with six straight points to push their lead to 10.
The defense began to clamp down from there, holding the Seawolves without a point for nearly four minutes midway through the first half. Despite their own shooting woes, the Hawks crept back into the game, cutting the lead to three when Burton nailed a three-pointer with 5:32 to play. After the Seawolves got back on the board with a jumper from Anthony Mayo with 5:08 remaining, Hartford answered with a bucket from
Charles White to make it 21-18.
White, who scored five points and pulled down two rebounds in 12 total minutes, was a bright spot for the Hawks off the bench. He provided a defensive spark during that first-half stretch, playing six minutes in the first half with a steal and no turnovers. His five points marked a season high, and were his first points since scoring a bucket at California on December 28.
Hartford trailed 28-20 at the break, and got no closer in the second half as they opened the period on a 3:41 scoring drought. Although Minor's lay-up with 16:19 to play cut the deficit back to nine, the Hawks were not able to build any momentum as Leonard Hayes immediately answered with a three-pointer, and Bryan Dougher hit a trey a minute later to make it 37-22.
Minor finished with eight points, four rebounds and two assists for the Hawks.
The Hawks were uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball on Saturday, committing 14 turnovers that led to 20 points for the Seawolves. Hartford mustered just four points off the 11 turnovers they forced Stony Brook to commit.
Seniors
Morgan Sabia and
Joe Zeglinski were held without a field goal, the first such game for either of them this season. Although Sabia hit all four of his free throws, Zeglinski was held scoreless for the first time in his 125-game career.
