BOX SCORE
BOSTON - In a physical war on the Case Gym court on Saturday night, the Hartford men's basketball team could not finish the job against Boston University, falling 61-50. Hartford could not score for 7:57 down the stretch as they lost a four-point lead and the game. The Hawks remain winless in Boston since the 2001-02 season, and have not swept the Terriers since 1998-99.
Morgan Sabia led the Hawks with 14 points, adding five rebounds.
Anthony Minor scored 11 points, pulled down four boards and added four assists and two steals en route to being named the America East Player of the Game. Darryl Partin earned the honor for Boston University, scoring a game-high 25 points.
Milton Burton and
Genesis Maciel scored eight points each for the Hawks.
After falling behind big early and having to claw their way back into it last month against Boston University, the Hawks took control early on Saturday and led for the majority of the contest. Both teams were cold right out of the gate, but after John Holland hit a jumper to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead with 16:02 remaining in the first half, Hartford ran out to a 9-0 run, forcing a timeout by the Terriers with the score 9-2.
Boston University got back into the game and would take a two-point lead with 6:28 on the clock, but whenever the Terriers edged out in front, the Hawks seemed to have an answer. After Boston University took that 18-16 lead,
Anthony Minor drove to the hoop, scoring a drawing a foul. He converted the three-point play and Hartford was back on top.
The Hawks did not trail again in the first half, going into the break with a 26-24 advantage.
Hartford's lead would reach as much as six in the second half, but the game remained tight throughout. In all, the lead changed 14 times on Saturday night, and the two teams were tied on nine occasions.
With 8:10 remaining in the game, Minor worked his way to the hoop for another lay-up that put the Hawks out in front, 47-43. It would be the last bucket for the Hawks until Sabia's three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining.
Boston University took control from there, methodically working their way to an 18-0 run which sealed the game away. It was eerily similar to Hartford's 59-55 victory at home last month, when the Terriers were held scoreless for the game's final 7:16 and without a field goal for over 11 minutes as the Hawks recovered from a 16-point second half deficit to win.
Hartford was outdone on the boards 40-20 on Saturday, with the Terriers tallying 11 second-chance points compared to just three for the Hawks. After shooting a season-best 50.9 percent from the floor against Maine on Thursday, the Hawks were limited to 35.4 percent shooting on Saturday night, and just 6-of-26 from three.
The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday night, when they host Binghamton at the Chase Family Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are still available, and can be purchased at the Malcolm and Brenda Berman Athletics Box Office, or by calling 860-768-HAWK. Fans can also catch all the action on the flagship station of Hartford men's basketball, WDRC-1360 AM, with Jeff Dooley and Randy LaVigne calling the action.
