WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford men's basketball team could not get started on Wednesday night, as it fell to BInghamton, 77-47. The Hawks shot 3-for-17 from beyond the arc in the first half and just 6-for-27 for the night as they fell behind early and never truly threatened in the game.
Morgan Sabia led the team with 11 points, and was named the America East Player of the Game. Mahamoud Jabbi earned the distinction for Binghamton, knocking down 12 points and adding 17 rebounds, a school record. Jabbi's total outdid the Hawks on his own, as Binghamton outrebounded the Hawks 45-15.
The rebounding and shooting woes were the story of the game, as the Bearcats scored 23 second-chance points compared to just eight for the Hawks.
Anthony Minor finished with nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Hartford. He provided a moment of excitement for the Chase Arena crowd when he drove from the top of the key and threw down a thunderous dunk in the second half.
Hartford took a quick lead when Joe Zegilnski knocked down a three-pointer less than a minute into the game, giving the Hawks a 3-2 advantage. It would prove to be their only lead, and the only trey that Zeglinski would hit on the night. As a team, the Hawks missed their next 12 long-range shots before
Milton Burton knocked one down with 4:58 on the clock in the first half which made the score 26-15 in favor of the Bearcats.
The Hawks, who allowed just 61.5 points per game during league play coming into Wednesday night, allowed the Bearcats to shoot at a 55.4 percent clip (31-of-56). Binghamton had assists on 18 of its 31 field goals, and hit all five free throws it attempted as a team. They were also 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) from downtown.
Hartford will get back to work in preparation for its next game right away, as the Hawks will travel to UMBC for a game Saturday evening. The Hawks and Retrievers will tip it off at the RAC in Baltimore at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Fans can catch all the action on the flagship station of Hartford men's basketball, WDRC-1360 AM.
